My new baby!!!

So my mother and I went to petco today, (not looking for a bird because of the way they treat them.) We did go into the bird room of course, and there was a white capped pionus. She was a bit cage bound and only had about 2 toys in her cage, no swing or anything else a parrot would need to be happy. We were upset and felt so bad for her. Of course, knowing us we went right back and rescued her. She has already began to warm up and loves her new cage. She even let me give her scritches after a while. I named her Dreamer because she just looks up in the air, as if she's daydreaming . I never expected to get a pionus, but now that I have I realize what charming birds they are. I love my new baby!!!

I couldn't get a picture because she's sleeping, but I'll be sure to put some up tomorrow.

Also, her feathers are very molted, is this because of the stress of the pet store? I've given her much healthier food than they did. Is there anything I can do to help her through the molt? I have not experienced this with my 1 year old Senegal yet.

My new baby!

I congratulate you on your new baby. But most importantly did you put her in quarentine away from your other bird? This means another room, door closed, air vent covered for 30 days. Have her checked by a vet. Hopefully the feathers are due to a natural molt and not an illness.

she was weighed and seems very healthy other than the molt. i think it was the diet she was given, and the stress she was under.

Congratulations! Part of the feather condition could be her diet at the pet store.

she is a very special bird and we were worried about what was happening to her there. She's only been there 2 months. The one person who worked there who had any interest in her took her out for shoulder rides once a week. Other than that there was no playstand in the room and she didn't get out. Rather than encouraging her to step up she grabbed her out of her cage, even though with a little patience she stepped up for me. I am not going to look at the birds there anymore. There were 2 brown throated conures, one was plucking the other 'mean since the day they got him'. I remember when Petco first opened and they made a big deal about how they didn't carry puppies. Why is it OK for them to mistreat birds then? There is another Petco 15 minutes away from that one where they have a bird room with a stand and they take the birds out every day. They don't ever grab the birds. Our big dilemma was they will now get more birds to fill the empty cage, but we couldn't deal with knowing there was a sweet gentle bird there who would fit in very nicely with our flock and be a wonderful companion for my daughter living out a sad life of learning to mistrust people isolated in that cage with no entertainment and poor food. sorry for the tirade. At least we know this one will be spoiled, well cared for and loved.

Congrats on Dreamer! First if she is not DNA sexed then she could be a he. Monty has spent 11 years as a male and I'm 95% sure he's a girl, lol. Second, I would definitely get her into a vet asap. That does not look like a normal molt to me, it looks like she has been plucking her feathers. That could be due to stress of being at the pet store but it could also be from mites or other illnesses as well.

Have fun with her, you are going to love her! Monty is such a great bird.
