Music for Birds

I have just started experimenting with music for Jake my Sennie and I was just curious if anyone else has the same experience. Jake recently has been VERY vocal, so I'm trying to encourage him. I put on Mariah Carey's number one's because someone said their bird likes her and he was tweeting with her on every song! Are there other artists that birds tend to like? Anyone? Go ahead - what does your bird listen to?

I think that many amazons who are the natural divas of the parrot world especially like listening to sopranos. I know that my YNA will trill along happily whenever I dust out the old opera cds. My macaws LOVE anything from the Sesame Street songbook. For some unknown reason, they all seem to really like Zydeco. That's really strange, for the ONLY time I ever play it is during Mardi Gras and then its on Public Radio.

Considering how many native birds sing to attract a mate or to define territory, it makes perfect sense to me that they'd sing along.

My macaws all sing along to Popeye the Sailor Man. I haven't a clue why, but its their favorite song.

I always leave music on while I am gone. I have noticed that different types of music bring out different moods in my birds. Jazz keeps them pretty low key, country gets them going, and they love showtunes.

Thanks! Yes, I've been hearing showtunes especially although that hip-hop "Doncha" threw me for a loop! That's hysterical. Dear Outlaw, what's a "veteran of the bird wars" mean exactly? That's a beautiful Blue and Gold.

I know Jessica seems to like anything with a girl singing.

as well she gets her dose of Classical on the CBC every day. (she really seems to like to listen to it)

well....they will surprise you.

Floyd got his name from...you guessed it..Pink Floyd.

I went to change the station when a particularly loud and screechy weird psychedelic guitar power explosion came on really loud. I thought it would scare the bird so I changed it. turns out he was getting into it. he threw a fit.

when I turned it back to screaming electric guitars he was happy again.

you mileage may vary

Supposedly there's a study out there that hard rock and heavy metal types of music can bring out aggression in parrots; we're not allowed to listen to these at work with the parrots around. It seems like common sense, but I've never seen the actual study. Anyway, it would seem that the mellower the music, the calmer the birds.

My birds have not shown a preference for one type of music over another.

Just saw your inquiry about the veteran of the bird wars. Well, its fairly common knowledge that there can be lots of petty jealousy all over the internet bird forums. Suffice it to say that I've had my share of scraps, but I'm still standin'.

Both my girls love Ray Charles. Zen also likes Reggae music and lately Cory has shown a preference for Fleetwood Mac.

I have a few books on CD and I have been playing one of my Harry Potter CDs for my new Budgie. Jim Dale does the voiceover and his voice is very relaxing - and I really think that my bird enjoys it, he starts chirping and moving around when I put in on.
