Lattice Balls - Safe toys?

Hello.

I know I post a million things on here, but I was just curious about a certain toy I bought for Jake (which he seems to love). Lattice Balls - those little plastic colorful balls that cage in a bell. Well, my concern is that he's chewing the plastic caging and I wanted to know if he's smart enough to know not to eat the plastic. I see plastic pieces all over, but you never know. Is this a safe toy?

Thanks,
Jon

Jon:

The greater problem with lattice balls is the little jingle bell that is usually inside. If you have tiny birds, like budgies, you will be fine. However, with Sennies and larger, they can get through the plastic and access the bell. There are COUNTLESS stories of birds losing tongues and toes in those bells.

And, if they can manage go smash the bell, then they can actually amputate toes.

I have no bird here small enough to safely have a plastic lattice ball toy. My only smaller bird is a quaker.

Try searching out whiffle balls instead... They are usally white balls with holes in them, often times seen in games for little kids as they don't hurt nearly as bad as a baseball does... He may enjoy these and they are safer.

Thank you so much gals! I will dispose of them immediately. Where can I find waffle balls small enough for him? He really likes them and the bells.

Hmmm, I'd have to double check but I believe I have one ball that actually has a round plastic bead in the middle instead of a jingle bell.... Keep your eyes open at pet stores and you might be able to find one!
