jardines vs senegal

I'm currently researching on the different breeds to figure out which suits me best. Can someone tell me the differences between a jardines and senegal?

This is what I know about the poi's in general.
They aren't clingy, are good talkers, relatively quiet and are cuddly and playful. Is that right?

A shop keeper told me that senegals may get unpredictable when they mature and she preferred the jardines. Is she right? Do these birds get tempermental as it reaches maturity??

I believe most birds "grow up" From what I have read this may stand out in Senegals after 5 plus years. Zoey is almost 3 so I don't know. I love her to pieces. I have heard nothing but good about Jardines as well.

The only thing I can say on this topic is there are many senegals offered for sale [rehomes]in the local paper and birdstore, but I've never seen a jardines up for rehome.I can't say whether that's because one is easier to live with or one is just so widely available.

i think alot of it depends on how you raise the bird, and how you train him. you have to train the birds to behave, they arent born knowing what is acceptable and what isnt. whatever you decide, just make sure to praise all their good behaviors and discourage the bad. this should help to ensure that your bird will keep on behaving himself :) sennies just seem to be more of a one person bird, not all of them though. jardines can be really good birds if you raise them properly and handle them daily. but, ive seen some evil little birds of both species though, lol.

I had the same decision to make with the Jardines and Senegals. I have not regreted my final choice one minute. I now have Chloe and Zeke two Senegals. I will say this about them. They are 6 and 7 now and Zeke can at times be very agressive but he also listens when I say no bites and touch his beak. Chloe, I have never to this date had a problem with biting. She is very cuddly but she doesn't talk a whole lot. My guess is to go with one that really strikes your fancy when you hold him her.

I've met many Senegals, Meyers, Red Bellies and 2 Jardines.
They are NOT quiet birds. The Jardine is the largest of the Poicephalus and has (I find) a loud, somewhat irritating, frequent contact call.

IMO, and it is just that.... I'd choose the Senegal but look for a re-home and see what the birds personality is like.

My Meyers is now 5 and has changed from what he was as a baby - very aggressive at times. I must admit that this may be partly our fault as we gave him alot of freedom and now he thinks he's the boss of the family :(

Good luck with your decision!

Though they're not often seen, the Cape Parrot is the largest Poicephalus Parrot. Mature Jardine's are usually about 250-300 grams in weight, the mature Cape Parrot is around 360-400 grams in weight. Until I actually had the chance to interact with four Jardine's and two Capes that were side by side, I didn't realize they were that different in size. There was also a female Red-Bellied Parrot next to them and she looked tiny by comparison.

I've had a Senegal for nearly three years and he's a great bird. He loves to be cuddled, would like to be with me all the time, but does fine when he needs to be in his cage for a day. The only downside is that on occasion he is aggressive. This is usually during the middle of the day and almost always involves food (me having it and Pepper not receiving any). This has greatly diminished by always giving Pepper a healthy treat (often a Nutri-Berry) when I'm eating near him.
