Buddy doesn't want to go back in his cage

My Senegal,Buddy, doesn't want to go back in his cage after I have had him out . I do exactly what I'm supposed to do(I think) I come up behind the perch and keep the perch in front of his chest so you'd think he HAS to just climb onto the perch...right? well, Buddy turns his entire body around...neck, and chest, and climbs back on my arm and starts cooing. he obviously does not want to go back, but be with me. He just keeps purring, cooing, until I finally have to literally pick up his entire body with my left hand and put him on the perch. It really makes me feel bad to do this becasue I know he wants to just be held and loved. I'd keep him with me all the time except we have 12 cats and three dogs who also need my love and attention.
Any ideas?

You shouldn't feel bad about picking the bird up by it's body unless your doing it badly.

Sometimes it's needed untill he can work it out to stay in his cage. You could consider giving him treats after putting him back in his cage to re-enforce him going back in.

Just pick him up, put him on the perch and give him a small treat.

I agree with zztops.
After some time and getting used to the routine he'll know that he should return to his cage. You shouldn't feel bad.

I step down Zoey into the cage. Plant her butt right on the perch and move my hand down and back. There were a few times she managed to make it up my arm but she learned what I wanted. Its all part of the training.

ahh! an opportunity to challenge and train my human... let's play the i don't wanna step down game... and see how long i can extend my attention time!
[/sennie brain]

just gently reinforce that you're in charge. casper does this to my husband but not to me! she tried it once and i picked her back up, looked her straight in the eye, and told her that i expected her to listen to me when i asked her to do something. and she would step down just like i asked her to. in a firm but not yelling voice. i think facial expressions help too. she has never given me trouble again. but she's a very well behaved bird overall.

the thing about these guys is they will challenge you when the opportunity arises! :P
