Jardine

We have a Jardine that is 33 years old and still going strong. Her owner died and she went to a rescue where we got her about four years ago.

We spend $400 a year for an annual physical and give her lots of love and toys to play with. She was raised on Pretty Bird for Africans, with lots of vegggies, and one almond per week. Her species is very suseptable to hardening of the arteries if given too much fat.

She is in a bird room with two Meyers, one Senegal, one Umbrella and one Patagonian Conure. She has a window site so she gets the morning sun. She seems happy and heathy. She loves my wife.

She has a vocabulary of about 15-20 words. Mommy, I love you, Pretty girl, etc. She is very good at sounding like the birds outside and she can bark like our dog.

She has the "Jardine Attitude" which we think is funny. She does what she wants, when she wants. But that's ok.

Interesting information.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but what I've taken away from the discussion is this: Smaller species may have longer lifespans as avian medicine advances?

Possibly. Although truth be told I wouldn't think a quaker could get to 50 years old, but if the band was correct then it's proof enough! And I wouldn't think a budgie would be able to get older than 25, and I haven't heard of any either.

I'm sure we'll be seeing longer lifespans in the larger birds as we improve their diet and environment! Many large species don't normally live more than 50-60 years due to a bad environment or bad diets... but there have been a few who have lived older, so we all know it's possible to have a parrot live as long as humans (80+ years)...
