Question red bellied or meyers?

Hello

My name's Jaclyn and i live outside of Chicago. I'm very interested in getting a red bellied parrot. The only thing is I can't seem to find anyone around here that has any babies. So I was thinking about getting a Meyer's. I really dont know what the the differences are between them other then the coloring. I can hold on getting a red bellied if they are better to have. Can any of you help me out on making a decision. I would be very greatful! Thanks

Hi Jaclyn, as you can see by the pic in my signature, I'm probably a bit prejudiced toward Red Bellieds! But to be fair, I think it's all down to the individual bird. From what I've read and heard, Meyers tend to be a bit quieter, but I mistrust generalizations like that.

My only experience is with a young male Red Bellied, and I can only tell you that he's a real sweetheart and I wouldn't trade him for anything. As he matures, undoubtedly challenges will arise, but they will with any parrot, of any gender, of any sub-species.

Another one you might consider is a Senegal, which is also a Poi. I met a 4 year old male Sennie in a pet shop a while back, and if I hadn't already had Tausi, this one would have come home with me. He had a great personality, with a pretty good vocabulary.

It's possible that in general, the males are a bit easier-going and goofy, but I believe that any of the Poi family are going to be pretty similar aside from appearance. I like 'em!

Here's a link on Poi's and info on some of their differences. A few owners/breeders share their experiences with each subspecies.

Hi Jaclyn,

I live in Oak Lawn also--St. Linus paris! Between the two, I would choose a Meyers...Chicago Birdhouse in Orland has them quite often!

Best of luck on your decision!

Bob

I'm partial to red-bellieds myself... although I can't speak from hands-on experience. The research that I've done leads me to believe that a RBP would be the poicephalus for me... That said, I've always heard great things about Meyer's, Senegals and poicephalus parrots in general.

Definitely check out the link that birdface shared. You'll find quite a bit of information there!

Best of luck,

-e-
