Cage size for Myers?

When I got Butters I bought him with the cage he was in. It's the Super Pet EZ Care Bow Front Mini Playtop Bird Cage. Here's a link to it. Super Pet EZ Care Bow Front Mini Playtop Bird Cage at PETCO

I've read varying info on what size cage they should have. My first reaction was that his cage was way too small. I can fit 3 small toys in there as well as his corner cozy and foot toys on the bottom. Anything more than that seems way too crowded. It says the dimensions without the stand are 41x18x18. However, I do believe that is the outside of the cage.

It feels so small to me, plus with the acrylic front, that's less bar area he has to climb. Plus, it's hard to hang varying toys from the top even with the removable tray on top. Ideally I'd like a cage that he can climb all around on. Is it just me or does anyone else not like this cage for him? I'm thinking of buying one tomorrow or the next day and just selling this one I guess. What do you think?

i would go wtih something bigger. i dont like any acrylic for bird cages. not only can they not climb on the acrylic, but it also restricts airflow, even if its only on one side. acrylic also scratches easily :( and for that price, you could even find a smaller amazon cage with a playtop :) this cage is always a good, cheaper one too. it doesnt really come wtih a playtop, but you could always make your own playtop!! its really easy, especially if you use pvc piping and those rope perches that you have to screw into the cage bars, those will always work very well when you build your own playtop.

this is a pretty good one:

stuff for sale

here are some more at pretty decent prices:

Hi, birdsnreps! Thank you for your reply. I'm just posting the same respone as I posted in my other thread. I knew my gut instinct was right about this. I definately felt strongly that this was the wrong cage for Butters. I went out tonight and puchased a dome top for him with the following inside measurements 25"L x 21"W x 30"H . I knew the cage was just right for him as soon as I saw it. My husband and I put it all together and I let Butters hang out on the cage while I was putting his toys in it and arranging it for him. He's soooo much happier now. Before he was using only 1 perch nearly all of the time and wasn't very active. Now he's climbing the new cage like a pro and is being very active playing with all his toys. All of that in about 2 hours time. I was also able to add more toys without feeling like I was overcrowding him. I thought he was being so clumsy in his old cage because he's just a baby, but I really believe now that it was the lack of climbing area and the acrylic made it awkward for him to maneuver in there! I'm so happy that he's happy! There's more light and air coming in and I know that I made the right decision. We lost only .5 in the height of the cage, but you can't really tell. He gained so much more room in the areas that he needed it. The inside measurements of his old cage were 17.5x17.5x30.5 . I'm going to buy him a seperate playgym later in the week since he won't have the one on top of the cage anymore. Thanks again! :)

I'm not a big fan of the EZ Care cages. The idea is a nice one but up close they don't look all that sturdy.

I've not owned a Meyer's parrot but they are a species I've considered. I've read that a bare minimum would be 24"x24"x24" but if you can get closer to 30" or even 36", all the better :)

I am currently looking for a new cage for my four year-old female meyers, and I (in my personal opinion) would never put her in anything smaller than 36x26". (WxD) But sadly, it is hard to find anything decent in that size that still isn't any wider between the bars than 3/4".
I checked if she could be able to get out of my cockatoos cage (which has a "between-bars" space by 1"), and yes, there is a risk she could stick her head out of those bars and get stuck.

But I would say - try to find the biggest cage you could afford, but still be good for such a small bird considering what I just wrote.

Thanks for your input everyone. I did get him a new cage that same night and he just loves it. It's the perfect size for him with the right size bar spacing. That's the thing, I had wanted to get him something a bit bigger even but the bar spacing wasn't right on anything bigger. But, I believe he has plenty of room and I also bought him a seperate playstand. Honestly, he spends so much time out of his cage it's a non-issue really. I'll post some pictures here for you guys in a seperate thread.

Yondo- Your meyers is beautiful!!!
