tips on selecting
I'm planning on going to Omar's this weekend to pick a bird!
It will either be a pionus or a poi - probably a brown belly (I think that's what it's called) or meyer. I haven't 100% decided on it and would ultimately depend on a particular bird. Are there anything I should be looking for/avoid when selecting one? I believe they aren't weaned yet but should be ready to come home in about a week. Also, any tips on what to get for the cage? Any particular types of toys that you think they would like? treats? any suggestions will be appreciated. |

The memories of getting a new bird . . . enjoy it.
I would suggest that you look for parrots that appear healthy and happy. They will be bright eyed, clean around their nares and vent area and are active, though they may take a nap, curious and interactive with you. Try to let the parrot choose you. When I was considering bringing home my first parrot, I really wanted an African Grey. While at the bird store observing and interacting with the African Greys out on play gyms, this funny looking, oddly colored, small parrot on a nearby play gym kept getting my attention. Though there were five similar looking parrots on this play gym, this one kept coming over towards me, would follow me as I moved around his play gym and kept calling to me. He caught my attention and hasn’t lost it in the three plus years we’ve been together. To find out more about the Senegal Parrot (he’s a Poicephalus), Pepper, who chose me visit his web site linked at the bottom of this post. You'll find information there on cages, toys and other aspects of life with a parrot. As to the “brown belly” Poicephalus Parrot you mention, I don’t know of one by this name. There is the Brown-Headed Parrot, which is one of the more common small Poicephalus Parrots (this includes the Senegal, Red-Bellied, and Meyer’s). There is the larger Poicephalus Parrots, previously named Cape Parrots, which are now called the Brown-Necked Parrot and the Brown-Headed Parrot (yes, someone actually named two clearly different species in the same Genus with the same common name). Good luck with being chosen by a very special parrot. |

Thank you for your feedback. I enjoyed checking out your informative website too.
I think what I meant is a red belly (not brown). They look very much like meyers but the beak has a clear/pinkish tint close to the nere. |
