Plucking

Peanut (TAG) bit Kito's (sennie) toe about a wk ago. Since then, Kito hasn't left it alone long enough to heal. He is so frustrated with the whole thing that now he has started plucking. Yesterday it was only the leg of the foot that is injured but today he has his entire underside plucked. I collared him twice but he has managed to get the collar off both times. I'm not sure now what I should do next. He is on antibiotics and cortisone but that doesn't seem to help much. He won't leave the toe alone and the plucking is driving us both nuts. He will not tollerate having a body suit on either. Anyone with any suggestions? At this point I'm ready to simply restrain him most of the day! Poor guy isn't getting any rest and I know that's not helping things along. I tried chamomile tea but he refuses to drink any of it and then his stools become too dry. The vet thinks he will stop plucking once the toe heals but he won't leave the toe alone either.

I'm sorry, I have no suggestions... He is plucking do to his toe being injured, and may stop plucking when his toe heals, or when it stops bothering him, which is very hard for that to happen as he keeps going for his toe...

I'm not sure how you may get him to leave his toe alone unless you could cover it with something that he can't get through or take off.... I hope things get better for you. Good luck!

You need to find an AVIAN VET who knows what to do in your case. I had a canary that kept picking on it's leg and wound up dying from an infection, I'm sorry to say. I myself could have done better in that case and if I had it to do over, I would have found an Avian Vet that could have patched him up properly instead of me trying to do what I was not qualified to do at the time.....Good luck....

Kito

Kito's feathers are all coming back. He had been bitten by a brown recluse spider. It's been a long haul but he's now doing fine. He no longer looks ready for the fryer! He is no longer on antibiotics or prednisone!!! Constant baths are now the order for the day to help with the new feathers! We thought it had been Peanut who started all this but it turns out that we were wrong!!! I'm so glad that she wasn't the culprit! LOL She's a good bird but can get cranky at times!

Excellent. Glad to hear your bird is better.

Bitten by a spider. WOW !!! No wonder the poor thing was worried. Probably afraid the spider would be coming back.
