When do Senegals reach maturity

I was trying to work out whether Worple is a girl or boy by looking at his/her tail feathers (method posted some time ago). It says I have to wait until they reach maturity. At what age would that be? I know that the only way to really tell is to have Worple DNA tested but it was only really out of curiosity. We don't really mind if he is a girl or a boy. If she is a girl (on her own) will she lay eggs and if so is there a magic age when this will start?

Thank you. We will have to wait and see what he is then. I personally don't mind either way and we will continue to call him a boy. My son is desperate for a male pet as all our pets are females.!!!!!!!

They usually mature around 2, but it depends on the bird. How old is Worple now? Besides the tail method, females generally have a deeper "V" on their chest.

I'm waiting the results on the DNA sex test on my senegal. Had it performed last Thursday. I did it for my information. The name Peeps sticks and I'll probably still her a "she" even if she is a "he". I call all my birds "she".

There are some female parrots that may never lay eggs in their lifetime while others may only lay eggs later into their life when they could be considered senoirs or close enough to one! Just thought I'd mention...

Thanks Monica for your reply. I am new to having fids and just wondered what might happen if she/he was a girl. I used to have a budgie Sam many many years ago but he was a boy.

Worple is great fun and we love him to bits. He has just start blowing us kisses now which my children think is great fun. He also enjoys immitating our home phone and mobiles which has us running around all over the place. :icon_smil

Between 1 and 3 years of age. Females often early (1-2) and males later (2-3). Most will not bred before 3-4 years of age.
