visually sexing senegals

i have a senegal i suspect is a male. can they be visually sexed? this is probably a wild caught bird...i live in egypt and i 'rescued' him out of a pet shop. would love to get him a mate, but i'm not sure if he's a male.

Thanks for that link LMPego,

I had heard/read before that there was no absolute way to tell other than fertile eggs or babies in the nestbox and I think that is still the case as the link you provided does use the terms "rarily" & "in most cases" & "usually" etc........I will still go check out my four and see how accurate it is with mine.......Three I know the sex of already (for sure) and I'll check the fourth out too.......

My Cory is DNAd female and matches the female description, but she's not fully mature yet. That's the other thing, you have to be sure that your bird is completely matured.
I've also read something about the depth of the V-shape on the chest being a way to sex mature Senegals, but I'm not sure which way it goes - I think a deep V means female and a shallow V means male. I've met a couple of older birds that match that description.

Thumbs up

Thanks so much for this thread, and that url. I'd been figuring that my senegal is female, mostly from behaviors of all of my birds, as well as the deep v-vest and dickie pattern. According to the descriptions and photos on the site, Cricket is definitely a girl.
