Pois as social birds

Over the past month I've been researching what bird would be best for me and have really been attracted to the poicephalus species as they've been described as quiet and independent birds which are both important qualities.

As a freelance filmmaker there can be long stretches where I'm home all the time and then suddenly working 12-14 hours on set with little time at home beyond showering, eating, and sleeping. I still live with my family (and intend to until I can afford my own place, though that would mean living with other film majors... we tend to flock together. Don't ask me why.) I'm not the kind of person to live alone which is probably good for the bird I get, but, as such, I'm also looking for a bird that can be socialized and not be a one-person bird. I'd like the other people I'm living with to be able to interact with the bird, especially on days where I would have less time at home.

From what I've read, pois seem to be mostly attached to one person. Does anyone here have a poi that's a good family bird? I realize every bird is a special case, but I'm curious for any stories...

Thanks, guys.

I have a cape parrot, the largest of the poi family. My children are both on their own, but come home to visit @ 1 time a month. Jazz loves them both, and happily goes to either of them for cuddles and attention. He will also go to my parents after he has been in their company for a while. As you have already realized, every bird is different, I would make sure that whatever you get is very well socialized, and exposed to lots of people once he settles in so that he feels he is part of a large flock, be sure other people do some of the good stuff (i.e. giveing treats etc.) so that you are not always the giver of all good things. Hope this helps, I know that we have other poi owners on board, hopefully they will jump in and share their experiences. Good luck with whatever you choose, come back and share pictures!

It's all about socialization.

People say Senegals are particularly prone to being one person bird. I've been introducing mine to other people since her baby days and she is wonderful with everyone.
