Senegal noise info
Reading lots of articles on the internet, they all say that Senegals are relatively quiet and less noisy than other parrots (suitable for an apartment/condo)
I was speaking with someone at a local reputable bird store regarding this info. He said that this is only true while they are young. Around 2 years of age, they get noisier and use this high pitched sound that will make your ears ring for half an hour! Wanted to hear some comments from Senegal owners who have had them since babies to see what they think... |

I have an 11 yr old senegal. She is VERY quiet. She doesn't scream at all. She talks and mimics sounds but nothing is louder than a loud whisper.

What is seldom for you? Once a week? 2-3 times a month?
You sure have a great Poi family there! Quote:

Definitely hope that's the case for me too!

When hormones levels are higher, she might do it more frequently per week. Other than that, it might be once a week or every two weeks. Now, my other Pois do tend to do it more often, specially my new Meyer's. But it's not constant, although it might happen a couple of times a day.

My Sennie, Pepper, is a four and one-half year old DNA’d male. We’ve been together since he was three months old. Most of the time his vocalizations are low volume and in a tone that is nice and not scraping down nerves. He does have a shrill and much louder alert call. Yes, if he’s on my shoulder and next to my ear when he makes it it’s not the most pleasant experience, but my ears don’t ring from it. It’s simply a loud whistle.
I can clearly hear Pepper’s calls when I’m outside of my home, but I can also hear my next-door neighbor’s Cockatiels just as easily. I have a very “sound sensitive” neighbor living downstairs from me. She says she never hears Pepper and I’d know it if she did. From my experience, Pepper does have the ability to raise his volume. Even at his higher volume he still has never matched the volume of the vocalizations of a Sun Conure, Caique, Quaker or any of the larger companion parrots. Pepper is usually at his loudest when he sees me preparing his fresh foods for breakfast and dinner. If I happen to drop a piece of his food on the floor as I’m preparing it, he loudly lets me know. As compared to other companion parrots, Senegals are considered a quieter bird than many. This does not mean they are silent. Noise is a very subjective issue. I’ve met people who aren’t bothered by the screams of a large Cockatoo or Macaw and I’ve met others who are bothered by the chirping of a pair of Zebra Finches. |

I agree with the seeming consensus here... Fidrych is mostly quiet - especially when his flock is near. He can get loud sometimes - usually if he hears me doing something he cannot see - he wants to be a part of everything!
I try to include him as much as possible, but sometimes (e.g. cooking) he just cannot be a part of the action.
