My Poicephalus is special because...........
Type of Poicephalus: Senegal Age: 5 years Where you got him/her: adopted from someone who needed to rehome him Absolute favorite treat: any type of "people food" Cuddly/not cuddly: very cuddly, LOVES head scritches Talks? He laughs a lot, not sure if he says anything else Tricks (if any): none...yet Behavior issues he/she is working on: Not screaming when I leave the room, and not biting when he gets startled Describe some things that make him/her special: He is such a loving, sweet bird, especially considering his past. I am still getting to know him, as I've only had him for a few weeks, but he has already one of our special birds.

Type of Poicephalus: I have a female RB, Penny & a male Senegal, Jack.
Age: Penny is 1 1/2, Jack is 8! Where you got him/her: Penny from a great breeder, Jack was rehomed to me. Absolute favorite treat: Pine nuts for both, eggs for Jack. Cuddly/not cuddly: Penny used to be ridiculously cuddly but more reserved now, we had a phobic attack that I didn't recognize in time so she is somewhat scared of me now. I do miss her but we are working through it. Jack is cuddly! Talks? Says ___. Penny: Hi Penny, I love you, What a good girl. Jack: Hey baby, what's up, come here, hiiiiiii, what a good bird, what a pretty bird, what are you doing. Tricks (if any): None really, I really should trick train them. Behavior issues he/she is working on: Penny - retaming because of phobic attack as above, Jack came to me plucking. Describe some things that make him/her special: Penny will grab my finger with her foot, and rest her beak against it to steady herself while getting scritches.. pretty cute. Jack is OCD and has to have everything just so. |

This will take a bit of time as I have four....
_________ Type of Poicephalus: Senegal (Shade) Age: She turned three last March. Where you got him/her: "Breeder". He had other breeder birds, but the Sennie babies he had at the time were given to him by someone else. Absolute favorite treat: Food. She's not picky. She'll eat anything. Cuddly/not cuddly: Has her moments and when she wants to cuddle, she gets quite close :) Talks? Says ___. Says a couple of words in French: "Bisou" (kiss) "viens-t-en" (come or come here). She says Peak-a-boo and Shade-eee-poo (nickname). Tricks (if any): Kiss on command (specially if there is a treat at the end of the line). She also "laughs" when appropriate. Behavior issues he/she is working on: None really, she's my "perfect" bird, for now anyways :) Describe some things that make him/her special: She's my first Poi but my second bird. She had issues with her right leg as a baby but with proper vet care and some extra attention, she got all better :) As much as I love my other birds, she'll always be my "baby" :) _______ Type of Poicephalus: Red-bellied (Joey) Age: Turned 4 last March. (Seriously, all three birds I know the hatchdate for were hatched in March...) Where you got him/her: A former member of my parrot club had to rehome him. He was quite picky about where Joey was going to end up and I was the lucky one in the end :) Absolute favorite treat: Hmm.....he's not as food stimulated as my other birds. I think if he gets a good genuine laugh out of his antics, he's quite happy. Cuddly/not cuddly: On the cuddly side. Talks? Says ___. He mumbles a lot, which I call "Joey talk". It's very cute. He has, since living with me, learned to say "Hey Joey!" Tricks (if any): Says "Hey Joey" whenever someone enters the apartment! Behavior issues he/she is working on: I worked on his nippiness in the beginning, specially towards women (his former owner was a man and his ex-wife probably showed contempt towards Joey (I know she did not really care for him)). He was also quite nervous. He's definitively made a LOT of progress. Describe some things that make him/her special:He's my clown bird. He makes me laugh everyday :) _________ Type of Poicephalus: Meyer's (Petey) Age: 13 or 14 by now... Where you got him/her: A rescue ran by some of my friends from the parrot club. Absolute favorite treat: Nutriberries, cooked noodles and dried papaya. She likes other food, but these three are probably her all time fave. Cuddly/not cuddly: HA! It depends with whom..very cuddly with my boyfriend, cuddly with other men, biting machine with women ;) Talks? Says ___. She says a couple of things, but some of the words she said a lot in the beginning she doesn't say much anymore. She knows "good bird" "Hi!" and "Petey". Tricks (if any): She competes with Joey on being the first bird to say "Hi" when someone enters the apartment. Behavior issues he/she is working on: Her issues with women (and other birds). Describe some things that make him/her special: She is excessively smart. Sometimes, it seems too smart for her own good...But I think she really had a rough start at life, I want to make her happy and hopefully provide her with a loving home (even if she makes it hard sometimes..) __________ Type of Poicephalus: Meyer's (Zuri) Age: 2ish (hatched in 1997, don't know which month) Where you got him/her: Same rescue I got Petey from. Absolute favorite treat: Nutriberries Cuddly/not cuddly: Has her moments, specially when it involves her head being scratched. Talks? Says ___. Not yet...but I sometime hear her trying things out when no one is looking (I hear her from another room, out of sight). Tricks (if any): Kiss for a Nutriberry Behavior issues he/she is working on: Nervousness around people; her first owner died of cancer and for a while, she didn't have too much attention. Describe some things that make him/her special: She's my little princess bird. She might be a little spoiled at times...but she likes it and didn't get too much in the first year of her life.

You know, why is it that this board is less active? Is it because people have fewer problems with Poi's? I have a GCC and the conure board is very active.
Type of Poicephalus: Meyer's Oscar Age: 5 1/2 months Where you got him/her: Breeder in IL Absolute favorite treat: Still learning people food. She LOVES my whole grain waffles, go figure Cuddly/not cuddly: Cuddles and coos with hubby, very reserved with me Talks? no, she whistles like my husband. He can't whistle, so it's very soft LOL. Tricks (if any): nope Behavior issues he/she is working on: very shy, only tolerates me :( Describe some things that make him/her special: I think she's gorgeous and the ideal bird, even when she calls it's never obnoxious (like my little GCC). She loves to shower with me.

But I also thinks it has to do with numbers. I think more people out there have conures than Pois. And overall, I think there are many more different type/species/mutations of conures than Poicephalus.

My Poicephalus is special because...........
Type of Poicephalus: Meyers Parrot (female) Age: 12 years Where you got him/her: I rehomed her from a family who could no longer care for her a year and a half ago. She's had two homes prior to mine. Absolute favorite treat: A dixie cup with her seed mix in it. She also loves corn on the cob and pea pods! Cuddly/not cuddly: She lives to cuddle! All she wants to do it be with/on me. Talks? Says ___. Doesn't talk. Tricks (if any): None...I should really train her! Behavior issues he/she is working on: She would love to eat my cockatiels. But I don't think I am going to ever get her over that. Describe some things that make him/her special: Lily is literally the perfect bird. She lives to love and be loved, will step up for anyone, and wants nothing more than to sit on you while you watch TV. She loves foraging for her food and playing with easy-to shred toys (notably corks, foam, and small plastic toys). I can not imagine my life without her - she's totally won me over to the poicephalus!

My Poicephalus is special because...........
Type of Poicephalus: Senegal Parrot Age: Nearly 5 years old Where you got him/her: From Parrots and Company in Stamford, CT, a great bird specialty store. Absolute favorite treat: Can I say whatever I am eating? He does enjoy a whole almond in the shell and almost anything he needs to forage to eat. Foraging is a major motivation to what he enjoys. Cuddly/not cuddly: I think Pepper lives to cuddle. Based on how often he does it, he loves lying on his back in my palm while stretching his neck out and receiving lots of scritches to his head, neck and crop area. Also, he’s an expert at nuzzling into a finger or neck to request a scritch when he wants one. Talks? Though not everyone can understand it, he does say, “I love you”. The little manipulator that he is, he often yells this when I’m walking out the back door in an attempt to keep me from leaving. Tricks (if any): He plays fetch with me with his foot toys, when I get tired of it he often will toss the foot toy into my lap. If I say, “Do a loop-to-loop”, he’ll loop around my finger. If I swing a leather strap, piece of rope or small plastic chain towards him and say “catch”, he’ll catch it. If I don’t say anything he usually simply swats at it with his beak. He’s target trained and will go wherever I place his target stick. Behavior issues he/she is working on: I think Pepper wants to be a manicurist, he can’t keep his beak off my nails. I don’t know what is worse, when he grabs my nail by the edge and twists or when he tries to grab the nail from side-to-side. Describe some things that make him/her special: The way he chirps quietly in the morning (usually around 5:30AM) until I uncover him. Once he hears me moving around he immediately calls loudly. How when he wants to come out of his cage he’ll wave his left foot for a step-up. The chattering sounds he makes when I block him from doing something he wants. He’ll then start waddling around. He reminds me of a grumbling child. Most special to me is how he has formed a bond with me and is so enthusiastic and positive when interacting with me. My Poicephalus is special because...........
Type of Poicephalus: Senegal Age: 1.5 years Where you got him/her: Local Parrots only pet store Absolute favorite treat: peanuts, almonds, nutriberries Cuddly/not cuddly: cuddly - loves scritches on his head/neck Talks? Says ___. hello, pretty bird, bat bird, see ya pretty bird, puppy, Fidrych (his name), mumbles other things I cannot yet identify Tricks (if any): sometimes he will "high four" Behavior issues he/she is working on: Like Pepper, Fidrych loves to pick at my nails, he yells "hello" as a contact call if he hears me in another room. Describe some things that make him/her special: He is totally unafraid of our dog, he laughs like my wife, and he "kisses" her (without touching) with a sound, he will bang his treat cup (Attica!) if I am late with the goods!

This is a great idea for a thread! I have learned so much from reading about all your poi's! Thank you for taking the time to type all this out. I am going to read back on this a few times!
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Type of Poicephalus:Senegal named Patience Age:Around 6mos? Where you got him/her:A friend and breeder in my neighborhood Absolute favorite treat:I am still learning about what she really likes, but she seems to LOVE dried fruit the best. Cuddly/not cuddly: Very cuddly! Unless she happens to see something she wants attck...like Kermit (my other sennie). Talks? Says ___. She is making more and more sounds every day. I have "thought" I heard her say hello once..but it was quick and then I have not heard it again. She moves her tongue all the time making it LOOK like she talking though. *lol* Tricks (if any): I have been clicker training her for a week and she almost has "the wave" down! I am very excited about that. She is great at the "target" comman too, but she has to be a little bit hungry to want to train, so I do it later in the afternoon right before I give her dinner. Behavior issues he/she is working on: So far I think she is perfect! I am not unhappy with any of her behaviors! Describe some things that make him/her special: She is smart, sweet, loving and spunky..what more could I ask for? -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Type of Poicephalus: Senegal named Kermit Age:3-4 mos. Where you got him/her: Friend and breeder in my neighborhood. Absolute favorite treat: ALL food..this guy loves to eat! Cuddly/not cuddly: EXTREMELY cuddly! But then again he is just so young so its a little early to tell. He gets pretty active and loud in his cage when he plays. Talks? Says ___. Nothing, but he like to do that sharp call out sound when we leave the room. Tricks (if any): Haven't started training him yet. Behavior issues he/she is working on: Dancing in his FOOD and kicking it out everywhere!!!! This one bothers me the most! He does it when he wants to get my attention. Describe some things that make him/her special: He chrips so sweetly in our ears when he is on our shoulder, he is just so loving right now...its precious!
