Jardine vs. Meyers

I was looking into getting a poicephalous one day in the future (not anytime soon, but wanted one of these to be my next bird). I have Green Cheek Conures and was curious how different either a Jardine or Meyers are from conures. Also, how loud are they? Do they have nippy traits? Are their diets much different from conures? Which one would you think would be the better choice coming from a conure background? Which one is quieter? Overall which do you like best? Thanks

I often tell people that my Jardines is a cross between a Green Cheeked Conure and an African Grey. They are extremely loyal birds, very, very playful and can be downright kooky. They're mischevious in a fun way and can be nippy if you let them. They think they're 8 times as big as they are - just like a Conure. They're fearless and aren't reclusive as well. However, there is a Greyness about them, they're wicked intelligent, bird voice but brilliant talkers, perverse in their sense of humor, and can easily become one-person birds if you let them.

Vocally, they're not loud. They make an almost cockatiel like whistle, they gurgle and babble quietly and do speak actual words but in a parrot voice. I totally adore them. They're really fantastic pets and in my opinion, a lot more interactive than a Meyers.

Here's Kgosi (8 months old) doing his normal morning sing 'n swing:

Wow he's very cute! Jardines are a bit harder to find. I would recommend the book The Senegal and it's Family by Mattie Sue Athan. She is spot on about these curious little birds in her book.

Also any bird has its own individual personality. My Meyers is very sweet and cuddly to my hubby :), less so with me. Her talking and noises are very cool, very parrot like. In general, she is a very quiet bird.

Parrot Species Comparison Chart ….Compare The Most Popular Parrot Species!

I enjoy this website to gain more info on birds, especially because I was interested in noise, cuddliness and talking ability.

Wow, that Kgosi is GORGEOUS! I love the name and what a character! I guess I was worried about the noise of a Jardine. I would probably be interested in a lesser Jardine though. And I have heard that they are serious biters! Hmmm, they are so pretty though! When do they get the orange on their bodies? How old is Kgosi?

Most Poi's are relatively quiet, especially compared to New World species. Kgosi is extremely quiet, with a whistle for a contact call. I'll try and film him for you when he's feeling talky, so you can see.

He's a lesser Jardine and my baby. I breed Greaters, but weirdly, I fell for a lesser as my pet. Same personality, just color and size difference between them. Kgosi is now 9 months old, I've had him since he was 5 weeks old. He's just now starting to get a few little orange leg feathers, but he shouldn't get his full orange head and wings until he fully molts a few times, and won't get full color really until he's about 6!

As for biting, they CAN bite the hoo out of you, but you can tell when they're shifting into over-excitement with the snakey body 'weaving', the wing curling and pinned eyes. When that happens, just lessen the activity and they'll calm down.

Very cool! Jardines are so beautiful. However, there aren't many in my area :( Also, it seems like when people get one they don't let it go! LOL! Not like other birds I see online. Perhaps it's because they are so rare. Well, maybe one day!
