In love with a Senegal...but not the price?

There's a flea market dealer around here selling a five month Senegal for $400. Now, I love this Senegal, but the price may make it impossible to buy. Have you've ever been in a similar situation? How did you talk down the dealer for your Poi? The Senegal let me flip him upside down and even played with me, where he was running away from other people. Thanks!

Where I live, $400 would be a very good price for a baby Senegal (they normally go for around $500 here from breeders, more so in pet stores).
I think most respectable breeders won't negotiate much on price; for one, there's not that much profit to be made and two, it does, sometimes, allow to weed out those are really serious about the bird from those who are not (not saying it's your case here). You might be able to work out a payment plan, that's if the person selling is willing to do such a thing.
However, on top of the $400 for the bird, you have to keep into consideration that you'll have to buy a decent cage (which will be another couple of hundreds of dollars), toys, good food and an initial visit to the vet (which, if you buy your bird with a health guarantee, you will want to do so that if there is a problem, you can bring the bird back).

In any case, good luck with your decision :)

I'm getting a free cage that is perfect, I just need to clean it up; it also comes with toys. I'm aware abut the vet visit and food. Thanks for the tip, over here that's pretty expensive for a Senegal. Do you have an idea if they'll be able to take a deposit, or hold the Senegal until I get the right amount? Thanks!

I agree, $400 is a very good price for a senegal. I used to breed them and sold them for $500, no questions asked. You might consider seeing if he would take payments. Otherwise look for a more in your price range. There are thousands that will play with you.

You need to ask the person selling the bird.

As for the cage, great.
The toys.....I personally wouldn't keep anything I couldn't thoroughly wash, specially if these were another bird's toys.
Anything would rope I would most likely throw out.

Thanks, I want to be able to make my own toys for him in due time^^. I'll ask about payments. I'm really excited, we're going to go see him again tomorrow!

No, he was sold right after I left, unfortunately. There is a Senegal female around here that I'll take a look at later this week, though.

Maybe you could see if any need rehoming. There are a bunch here I even saw a senegal for $150! Just depends on how much the person wants to get the bird to a new home. I'm looking at a Jardine's that's $500 which is a great deal, but there are some babies for the same price. I might make them another offer. I really want it, just don't know 100%. Does anyone know if Jardine's have really loud calls, louder than a Green Cheek?
