I think I am going to breed Ruepells Parrots too!

I think I am going to breed Rueppells Parrots too. I am very excited about this, but it is a very expensive decision. I am not sure if there are many people who would like to have them, since they are so rare. I would be the second person in the USA to breed them. Please give me some feedback.

Go for it. The fact they are so rare is a good enough reason to breed them.

Actually, there are a lot of Ruppell's breeders out there.

Steve Garvin, Ralph Tran, Eva something can't remember her last name, Fox's, Queen P, Linda Bellingham, John Sava, Julie Cassoway, Willa whatever her last name is, some person named Tina, Hmm...

No, I wouldn't say that's a "good enough reason to breed".

Schwabism... what are you breeding currently and what attracts you to the Rüppell's Parrot?

I have one breeder pair of Brown Heads I just recently got. I want to get a baby from them to keep as a pet because they are wonderful birds. I can't seem to get one here in Florida. I used to have one, but lost him earlier this year. I was thinking I want to have a Rueppells parrot also for a pet and I thought why not breed them and get my own baby? Again, not easy to get here. Of course I would have others to sell. I just love poicephalus and especially the rarer ones. It would be mostly for enjoyment, since I would only have two different sets of birds to breed.

I'm curious as a Poi owner, what happened to your Brown head?

I listed the other rupp breeders for you, because there is a conservation group for bloodlines out there due to their importation issues. Most of the rupps came out of the same importation facility and from the same distributors so you get a lot of same parent clutches popping up and that degrades the species. So, make certain you get truly unrelated rupps.

Wouldn't it be cheaper and better chance fo getting a healthy bird to get it from interstate from a reputable breeder? This I'll get a pair so I can breed my own baby just doesn't wash with me.

It would be cheaper to buy a baby from a reputable breeder, yes. Honestly, Ruppell's are quite rare and they're so similar to a Meyers, that most people really aren't willing to pay much for them based on rarity. Most breeders don't breed them due to the fact that sellling them would be difficult.

I have one pair of Ruppell's that I breed for a consortium. They parent raise all their babies and I only sell to those within the consortium itself. I never sell them for pet trade. And, honestly, I couldn't if I wanted to. Meyers and Ruppell's just aren't top sellers. Both parrots are very 'beige'. (sorry meyer's owners!)

Your individual mileage may vary of course.
