Going on vacation.
We are going on vacation in a month and my son is staying home and will be taking care of the pets. Our Quaker Moses is strongly bonded to me only and barely tolerates anyone else. Occasionaly he will let my wife rub his head. I can do about whatever I want to him. He is used to being out of the cage a lot and is usually with me or where he can see me when I am home which is quite often. We also have three Tiels which while they are not best friends with Moses and vice versa he seems to enjoy being around them and even flies over to their cages to try and stop anyone from putting them in their cage. His cage is usually in a spearate room but we are getting him a nice new big cage and plan to move him into the same room as where the Tiels are but on the opposite side of the room hoping that him being able to see the Tiels will cause him to be less lonely when no one is home. Occasionaly now I put him in one of the Tiels cage and then the three Tiels in the other cage when I have to do something and he is much less vocal than when I put him in his cage in the other room and he can not see me.
We adopted Moses last November and I have never been away from home more than four days. Last time I was out of town he became good friends with my wife but it was hilarious in that as soon as I was back it was adios muchochos to her and he was right back with me and wanted nothing to do with her any more. Talk about an opportunist! My wife and I are both going to be gone for ten days and I am worried about the stress that will put on Moses and want to minimize it. I know my son will let him and the Tiels out for a while every day but he probably will not make much effort to handle him [he usually bites my son] unless Moses tries to be friendlier which he may very well do with no one else around as he seems to need attention. If anyone has any advice, experiences, or tips to put me more at ease about going on vacation that would be great. I hope I don't come back and he wants nothing to do with me! I am not worried about the Tiels as my son likes to handle all of them but Moses is a much more complex [and interesting] creature. --- Steve |

Animals, including pets are much more adaptive than we probably give them credit for...we baby them cause we love to. Nature really doesn't do that.
I hope you're little guy does O.K. as he most likely will ~ you I am not sure. I am horrible when I have to leave my babies..... I miss them, I call thier sitter, I wonder how they are doing, but since I have left and come and gone, many times in the past and everything has always been fine you'd think I "get it" ~ but I still worry....so go on have a good vacation and worry all you want!!! |

AT least your son is a familiar person, better than a stranger! As long as he has all the details about food, vet for emergency, etc., Moses should be fine!

Well we went on vaction and are now home. Moses did cozy up somewhat to my son while we were gone. When we got home I put my finger out for him to step up. He gave me a big bite on my hand just to let me know he was not happy about me being gone and then all was fine. What a brat! --- Steve
