Unhappy Help! Feather Plucking!

My Quaker (Kiwi) is 1 year old. We have had her for 9 months. Everything had been going great until Thursday, June 30. I noticed a lot of feathers in her cage. When i got her out, she continued plucking feathers. Friday when i got her out, all her chest feathers were plucked and she had started plucking feathers from her back. Also it looks like she is picking at her legs. She has plenty of toys she plays with. I feed her Animal Farms Bonanza Bounti-Buffet. She likes seeds but doesn't care too much for pellets. I have no clue as to what she would be stressed out from. Please help. I am clueless! Thanks!!

You need to get Kiwi checked by your avian dr. If you do not have one please tell us where you are located and we can find one close to you.

Thanks for your help. I called around and finally found a local vet who deals with birds although he is not avian certified. I have an appointment for 10:30 tomorrow. Thanks again!

We went to the vet and he treated her for internal parasites first. I have to go back in a few days. He said if this doesn't work we might have to put her on prozac. I've never heard of a bird taking prozac. He said that it usually does the trick but its pricey. That's all I know so far.

Wonderful to hear that you followed through and that you now have a reason & cure for the plucking.

kiwi feather plucking

Glad to hear u r taking kiwi to a vet, hopefully he has run some tests or did some blood work on kiwi. I think before i start putting him/her on any type of medicine i would get a second opinion, specially for birds it really hard to diagnose what makes a bird pluck. many people have spent lots of money to find out why there bird plucks. and in allot of cases they still pluck. all i am saying is medicine like prozac can change your birds entire life and should be looked at by a certified avian vet before administering.
