Question Beak Trimming?

My qp is a little over a year old and when I first brought him home ( 5 weeks ago) his beak looked kind of rough with a bit of a chip in it. Within the last two days, it has started to look like he is filing the tip off of it. I didn't think his beak was overly long until I looked at this close up. Can he manage to file that himself or will he need a vet to clip it? He has one of those cholla perches (I think they are called) with the holes in it that he likes to rub his beak on. I just wonder if this is a normal growth thing they do or if he did all that because I had to leave him in the cage all day yesterday during the day and he is used to being out of his cage all the time? Here's a pic of his beak. Excuse the slightly disgruntled look, I took this pic at 7 am when he was still trying to sleep lol.

He can file his own beak if he has something to file it on. I think he is now settling down and finding beak filing possibilities. Chew toys, mineral blocks and perches are used to file. I don't know cholla, but maybe it is his chosen method to keep his beak in good condition.

His beak looks fine to me. He'll naturally wear it down with eating and playing. Beaks are not necessarily smooth; they have different layers so it'll look like that from time to time.

That is the way my Quaker's beak always looked. One time years ago I tried to clip my departed QP's beak and it bled. I never ever went there again. and she lived 10 years more. That pealed look is natural to the QP beak at least in my experience.

Thumbs up Beak Trim Story

I'll be honest with you. My Mexican Red-Head's beak looked just like that when I took him to the vet. Honestly, I thought there was nothing wrong with him. My vet told me that he recommended me to get my bird's beak filed. There was such a different after the beak was filed. The parrot looked so much healthier... he looked like he was in a magazine. His beak was smooth and shiney. After I brought him home I wanted to see if there were any serious damages through the internet. IŽve discovered that apparently there can be some occasions where the beak can grow too much to a point where it will be disformed. It is also a high risk or causing permanent damage such as chipping or cracking. Think of a birdŽs beak as your nails. You let it grow too much and youŽll have chances of the nail breaking and/or cracking, which can be very painful... now imagine the bird... imagine trying to eat when the bird's in pain. Trust me it's worth it.
