That is a nice bird. From my understanding he bobs his head up and down because he wants to get fed. My mickey did the same thing for the first few days I had him, until he realized I wasn't going to feed him anymore, I knew he was a big enough boy to eat by himself. He would actually bob his head and then not take the food I gave him, so I stopped giving him and now he just eats out of his dishes. I'm sure somebody here will give you a better answer than mine, I'm just a beginner. Keep the post coming and welcome to the board.

Quakers are silly, goofy, charming birds.
They can also be fiesty and fresh too, so never let
them dominate the household, or you! :)

Always start off with firm training on the "Step Up!"
routine, and stick with it.

Please don't try to make your Quaker and Dog "friends".
I lost a Quaker once to my daughter's little, 10 lb. dog.
It was a matter of an escaped Quaker, a instinctual act
on the dog's part, and then- a dead bird.
There were NO prior signs of aggression or anything
from the dog. Like I said, it was instinctual and it was
an accident.

You don't say what kind of dog you have, but even the most GENTLE
sweet dog can do serious harm to a bird (any bird, but especially
a smaller one) just by getting too rough or playful.
One swipe of the paw from a 50 lb dog can do serious harm to a bird.
One gentle "nip" that might not hurt you or me, could
seriously injure a bird.

Let your dog sniff the Quaker, *while you are holding it* and
that should be as far as their interaction goes, IMO.

Savvy*

I should have added that Quakers, while not the *loudest* birds,
sure aren't the Quietest birds around.
Lots of whistling, clucking, clicking, grumbling, squawking, etc.
They CAN learn to talk, (in a gravely, gruff little voice) so
maybe when your bird is screeching, you can walk over
to the cage and quietly talk to him in a soothing, calm voice.
When he calms down, take him out for some one-on-one talking
time and handling.

Also make sure he has lots of toys suitable for a bird his size to play with,
hang from, and chew up. They like toys with bells and noisy stuff too.
There should be at least 3-4 toys hanging from different areas
in his cage with perches nearby each.

Some Quakers will stop unnecessary screeching when they are given a bird snuggly, or perch/tent. Check them out too.

A "snuggly" or tent is a MUST with the quakers. Mine absolutely loves his. My quaker was given to me and is very territorial; he is fine once away from his cage, but getting him away is another matter entirely! He bites the heck out of all who come near.

Mine hated the snuggle tent...but I guess that's all trial and error

Like savvy said, PLEASE don't try to make your dog and the quaker friends! Don't EVER leave the quaker out of his cage unattended, ESPECIALLY with the dog.

As far as the noise, my quaker is louder than my conure, and louder more often. There's nothing you can do to stop it. But if he's being that verbal, there's probably a good chance, that with enough work, Max will be a wonderful talker! :D

Nina,
My sun conure hated the sleep hut as well. I found if I put it near the bottom of the cage so it wouldn't swing and sway as much he enjoyed it. Just a suggestion. You are right, though, what works for one doesn't necessarily work for another!

in that case PLEASE DO NOT LEAVE THEM ALONE TOGETHER....those dogs are natural hunters, and bird hunters at that.
