From what I remember, the nose holes for quakers are just about hidden;
slightly above the beak into the feathers. I don't have a quaker anymore, so I tried to find pictures on the net, but couldn't find any in which you could see even a hint of the holes... But they gotta be there! Savvy* I found this website (but the pictures are copyrighted) so you have to go look. scroll down a ways and check out the first Aqua-Blue quaker on the LEFT... you can clearly see a nose hole. :-) http://www.mylittledarlings.com/aquaquakers.html |

Savvy you are correct. The tiny nares are hidden in the feathers above the cere.

Just what are the sypmtoms of fatty liver in these birds. Mine is 3 years old and don't know what to look for. Will they show in the feathers or just the look. what food should be avoided to prevent this from happening. I got her after being abused and abandoned I hope it is not too late. She may already have it. Is there a test that I can ask the vet to do to tell? I would hate to loose her after winning her trust and my heart.

The best way to tell is to get a well bird check every year or two. Talk to your vet about FLD and have the vet help you get your quaker onto a healthy diet.
It is an all seed diet that does the quaker in. There are symptoms to look for. Obesity and sometimes you will see yellow feathers. But with Jassy she was plump but showed no feather signs. We only knew from the blood test that she had a lot of fat in her blood, necrospy showed advanced fatty liver disease and heart failure. I will never forget the heart break of coming home from Xmas shopping to find her dead. Lynda |

My heart goes out to you. I can't even image coming home and finding Peewee dead. She does have a few yellowish feathers on her tail but as far as being chubby in anyway she is not. infact I think she is a little too slim. I will be taking a trip to the vet very soon. Is this FLD reversable or not. She eats all kinds of veggies now and is not on just a seed diet. She does not like fruit, but I keep trying. Thank you.
