Walnuts, Almonds, and others

I bought some mixed nuts at the grocery store today and gave Mickey an almond. He sure has fun trying to break it open. He has some trouble opening it. I'm sure he can get into them, right? I placed a walnut in the bottom of his cage and boy is it funny to watch him chase it down and try to corner it to get a grip on it. I was also wondering if all vegetables are good for him. I know to stay away from lettuce, but stuff like green beans and carrots are good right? I'm sure these questions have been posted before, but I just couldn't find them.

Quakers are prone to fatty liver disease. I do not feed any nuts to them because of high fat content. This is one disease that can be avoided. They only get a few sunflower seeds also for same reason.

A balanced diet is seed, millet spray, pellets for trace vitamins and lots of healthy fresh foods. They can have many cooked foods also. With my 50'ish birds they get romaine lettuce, broccoli, grated carrots for some carrot sticks for others, belle pepper, jalapenos, kale, mustard or collard greens, zuchinni and yellow squash..... Not each of those daily but at least 3 or 4. Scrambeled eggs or hard boiled eggs about twice a week unless there are babys then every day for parents to feed. Brown rice, cooked oatmeal, toast and on and on. No butter and low salt. I sprout many bird seed mixes for them. They get turkey or chicken cooked on a rack in crock pot with 1/2 cup of water about once a week. This i do put pepper on and a bit of salt. They need some but not much just because their systems are tiny.

celery has high sodium/salt content so i don't feed that either.

think 'healthy' :-)

My Quaker eats everything I eat. She especially likes pasta, ham & Cheese sandwiches, chicken Mcnuggets, grapes, and also scrambled eggs, toast and coffee for breakfast. I was told by the breeder i bought her from she can eat anything I eat with no ill effects.

Samm, honestly, your quaker can eat anything that is healthy for you, which DOES NOT include coffee (caffene drinks, or pops/sodas, things with lots of sugar). As far as the cheese goes, try feeding your quaker the hard cheeses as these tend to be less fatty and oily... Try not to overdue it on fried foods (though some in moderation is fine). Otherwise, it sounds like you are doing a wonderfull job! Keep up the good work!

Monica,

Phoebe only has a few sips of my coffee with her eggs and toast, she's not a 3-cup-for-breakfast coffee drinker like me!
