quaker question

I was wondfering if bird have dandruff? Mickey will shake himself off and some dandruff-like stuff flie off him. I know he seems to be molting, alot of feathers on the bottom of his cage and some new ones that seem to be coming out on the top of his head and back of his neck. I may just be paranoid, but I thought I'd ask.

If he gets bathed frequently, you wouldn't be seeing much 'dust' from your bird. I've recently held a cockatiel that probably has never been bathed in years (if ever, his age unknown but I guess that he is older than 5 years). I held him on my bright red sweater, and after he got off, where he was sitting, that spot was WHITE... A bird should NEVER leave that much dust!

As long as your quaker is eating a healthy diet (not just seeds or pellets) and it looks like he is molting (feathers falling out being slowly replaced with pins) then it sounds like things are going well! During a molt, you should be bathing your quaker more frequently to help in the process of molting and to help loosen those prickly pins some so that the incoming feathers wont be so ichy.

Yes its normal , Quakers love to bathe I have a Dish that I leave in the bird room and Buddy jumps in a few times a week and the days he doesn`t I mist him with the water spray ...
The dandruff stuff would be the shafts from new feathers as he preens himself , looks like dandruff :icon_eek: ...
As monica said make sure you feed fresh fruit and veggies as well as seed/pellets and nuts a good all round diet does wonders for the condition of thier feathers...

Chat later ..Here is Buddy in his bath...Majj.. :icon_smil

Unhappy

Everyone says that their quaker loves to take a bath. Mine looks at it as a punishment, she will sulk for hours afterwards.
I'm not sure she ever had a bath before I got her. She was a reacue from an elderly lady's house that never gave her any attention. She was 3 yrs old. How can I introduce it to her with out her feeling threatened ? I have done it everyway that I have heard of. I can't even handle her afterwards. She will bite the tar out of me. :eusa_wall Does anyone have any suggestions?

I know what you mean. when i first got my Quaker, i tried to put him in the tub and he hated it. He would'nt have anything to do with me for some time. Now i just spray him with a mist bottle. He does'nt mind that so much.

Have you tried taking him to the shower with you , don`t force him to go in just let him sit on the rail and watch maybe see if he will accept a splash or two..I will put a face washer on my shoulder and my guys will sit on it just getting some spray ...
