Question Quaker Questions .....

I am considering for my next bird ... a quaker probably after the first of the year (but before then if I can get away with it and find one) .... but I am trying to consider ALL possible different care from tiels now and any changes that will need to be made for a quaker..

I have been doing some research on them.... now I have some questions to ask quaker owners..

Would the dust form the tiels harm the quaker if quaker's main cage was kept in the birdroom with teils???? after quarrintine....

Could I feed the same diet to the quaker as I do the tiels???
Teil diet consists of ....
1/2 fresh foods daily (Ks mix and individual fresh veggie/fruit)
seed /pellet mix (one scoop of each with half a scoop of oats and groats)

The seed I use is Sun Seed ...Vita for small hookbill, safflower formula with tropical fruit...

The pellets are Mazuri .... small bird maintenance diet...

Twice a week offer/give Sun Seed peak health formula...

Every Sun give a Fruit and Veggie treat stick .... after I deep clean cages...

I also offer/give veggie birdy bread every other day....

I have a mineral/vitamin block and cuttle bone in each tiel cage also...

Would this be OK to feed a quaker ?? or do I need to do/feed something different from tiels????

I use both water bottles and dishes .... and change water dish twice a day ..bottle daily .... could I use this with a quaker ... or should I get a larger water bottle/dish???

Almost every am ... tiels get a mist bath... before daily cage wiped down cleaning/paper change.... the tiels fuss BIG time if they don't get thier daily mist bath... is this too often for a quaker???

Cage..... tiels are in hand made with aviary wire 3ft wide, 3 ft tall and 2 ft wide cages.... could we build the same for quaker???

For emergancy/travel/transpot use... would a reg size tiel cage do???

Toys... do they need to be more sturdily made for quaker beaks????

I think you can now understand the spoild brat birds comments that BF makes... just wanna be able to take good care of FIDs and the new bird also...

And this is just the beginning of the questions.... I am sure that I will think of more later

Suz

P. S. Sooory this was sooo long of a post...

Hi Suz,

I have three quakers so I think I could answer your questions.
How many tiels? A few tiels the quaker should be just fine. But I would run an air purfier in the room.

The diet sounds good. Be careful not to give to much seed. Quakers are very prone to FLD.

I would use a larger water dish for the quaker so he / she can take a bath if it wants to. My quakers love water and love baths when ever they can get them.

Yes quakers need larger sturdier toys then tiels do.

Be careful with your tiels around the quaker. Quakers can hurt cockatiels badly and are much more aggresive then tiels are.

Yes a regular tiel cage is good for transport. The cage the quaker is in should be large as possible. Quakers are very active birds. But the cage size you mentioned will do just fine.

I call my quakers " my evil little minions" . Sometimes I will point at my daughter and yell " get her my evil little minions " All three quakers fly at her screaming, hover in her face and then they land on her and everybody including the three quakers giggle. Quakers are a load of fun but quite a handful sometimes.

Since you live in Florida you may be able to find a rescue near you with tame young formerly wild quakers. During the summer Florida rescues get in a lot of baby quakers that fall or are torn from their nests. As long as their beaks are still soft when they come in wild quakers make wonderful pets! Since rescues can not release them back into the wild they are plentiful in parrot and wild bird rescues all over the state. If you do adopt a wild quaker make sure it has been dewormed.

This is our wild baby Sora. She is a year and a half now. She was injured and the local wild bird rescue was going to put her to sleep.

Cool

Thank you for your response/answers...

I have a HEPA in birdroom ... just inside of door... I had to get another one for the tiels dust and MY lungs...

I do not plan on letting the 2 tiels and quaker to have "out" (of cage and free flying in birdroom with me supervising) time ... at the same time.... have read already of possible/probable aggression between quakers and other birds....

I have already considred having another cage (a little smaller) in another part of the house .... so when tiels are "out" that there wont be any bad feeling from quaker.... and to the same with tiels when quaker has "out" time

Will have to check out the rescues again... and thanks for the idea of the wildlife/wild bird one....

Last time I spoke/dealt with the local bird/parrot rescue here... they told me that I was not eligable to adopt ... due to the fact that I had bulldogs...

I will try them again....

Suz, I deleted the other thread as it confuses people when you double post in different forums.

My Chaska is jealous of any bird I give attention to. She is the most likely suspect in biting Maui's foot and I keep her clipped for this reason, the Tiels are fully flighted and can get away from her. She moves back and forth between the bedroom cage and the main aviary/birdroom to prevent her getting too territorial. She eats much the same as the Tiels/Princesses-seed, toast and veggies (broccolini, corn, celery, mung beans) and she will take anything off my plate whether it is good for her or not. Luckily, chocolate isn't on my diet!

Lynda, Sora is adorable!!!!

Well the fact that you have bulldogs should not make you ineligble. That's not fair. I have an 95 pound american bulldog that runs the other way when he sees a parrot on the loose.

Sora is wonderful and a great talker. She is just like any quaker you would get from a breeder.

To bad you don't live closer to me. I have an adorable quaker named Sammy who was a wild baby and waiting for a home. In fact he has been waiting months for a home.

Just remember if you get a wild baby to have it checked for parasites. They can carry worms, lice and mites.

The local parrot rescue (wich does NOT have a very good reputation)and says that I am inelligable due to bulldogs..

The also have a 5 year "trial" addoption period... they can come in any time of day or night to check on birds... if the bird has any health problems ... you ar responsible for vetin... when bird is healthy and behavior problems are slowing down... "they" start coming in early am.. 3 or 4 am... to check on bird... if you give an attitude for being woken up... bird is confiscated... due to "addoption" agreement and an inapropriate home/caretaker..

I have spoken with 5 people that have gone thru this with local parrot rescue... granted it is hearsay ... but 5 people saying exactly the same thing ... and they do NOT know each other... leaves a bad taste in mouth.. so to speak...do not want to get attatched to a bird... care for them ... and then have them yanked away form me...

I found out things/info ... from local avian vet... that let me meet and talk to each person ... when he found out that I was trying to deal with the parrot rescue.. I have already discussed this with one member of the board in the past... just in PM's not in the open...

I would be more likely to travel to YOU to get a quaker than to deal with these people...

Suz

Bf was the one who wanted a B&G baby... until he say the poop... was warned about morning bomb... and found out that he would have cage cleaning duties for the macaw... ..

I had him help clean tiel cages ONE time... changed his mind REAL quick...

I have wanted a quaker for some time... as long as I clean the cages and care/feed them... he dont care... how many birds I have... just NEVER wants to clean a bird cage again...

He is still visiting the G&B baby ... at least till it goes to its new home... 3 days before xmas... deposit has already been made by some one else.. and he can live with that ... cause he does NOT have to clean the cage or stand....

He finnaly heard a loud macaw call... does NOT want to live with THAT in house...

Said he would put up with my "little" birds any day... over THAT call...
