info on quakers

Ok as posted in another thread I am considering a new baby......... but doing some research first. I am tossing around a few different 'too types and have posted in that section, but am also quite taken with the quakers......especially the blue ones.

What are they like as pets? What are or might be possible problems with them? etc etc etc

I am fairly new to quakers myself. I can tell you that mine is the greatest. Very sweet, sometimes moody. He is an awesome companion. He picks up on phrases quickly. I don't know if you've googled for information on the web but there is a great website with alot of knowledgable people that could help you out better than I at Quakerparrots.com. Good luck with your decision.

i am surprised that you havent had more response. i have recently researched green cheek conures and quakers...finally decided on the green cheek which i love...while i think they are similar what ended up deciding it for me is that the quakers appear to be quite noisy at times, probably too loud for a unit...i would still like a quaker, maybe just not now...i was drawn to their intelligence, personality and talking ability...
there is heaps of info on this site, but also try googling ... quaker parrot.... there is just so much really helpful info you will come across....
good luck and hope you get more response.

Lol quakers can be naughty (the breeder im getting my alex from has a pet one). Her's is a big show off. They can be noisy but arent (what ive heard) sun conure noisy, more a repeatative clicking (hard to describe) noise. Can be nippy but you're used to birds anyway so a quaker shouldn't be as noisy as ekkies and arent as loud as the alex screach...so i've heard...but i like the greens...blues seem more calmer but thats just what i've seen.
And janinetiel I was looking at quakers and gcc and i have decided my next bird is a gcc too lol.
Too's are noisier but are sweet as!!! Whichever you choose im sure you will be able to handle fine.

I have a blue quaker that is almost 6 months old and he is a riot! My husband has even fallen for him, and he is not much of a bird person. He does have his moments where he can be loud. But I don't consider him any louder than my 2 budgies or my senegal. But when they all get to going it can be pretty loud. But they are not loud like that all day long.

We got him when he was 4 months old from a breeder that handfed him. He settled in here pretty easily, and to this day I can honestly say he has not bitten any of us. I have 2 boys that are ages 10 and 8 and they are able to pick him up and hold him with no problems. They like that since my senegal is not as friendly to anyone other than me.

I am not sure of any differences in the blue and green quakers. I just knew I wanted a quaker, and I was lucky to be able to get a blue at a very good price. Otherwise I would have been just as happily gotten a green one. As far as talking ability......He was not talking when we got him. But after a few weeks he was saying "hello" And now he will not shut up! He says hello, good boy, whatcha doin, huh ,quack-quack, peek-a-boo, Makes kissing sounds and Brrrrrrr sound LOL , and mumbles all kinds of things I can't understand. But one thing he does that he will not do with me yet when I play with him is laugh. But he will laugh soooooo much when playing with my husband. We get to cracking up and he laughs even more. It is the cutest thing I have ever seen. Also my senegal is almost a year old and has not said one word since I have had her but is great at mimicing sounds. She is starting to pick up on some of his speech as well. Not to his extent though. I am amazed at his ability to pick up on speech so fast. And to be such a little sweet heart at that.

We attempted to adopt a 3 year old quaker a while back before I got Ziggy, and he was a TERROR!!!! I ended up having to re-home him again due to not being able to handle him and his HORRIBLE screaming CONSTANTLY. Not to mention I got the crap bit out of me on several occasions just trying to change his food and water. He was VERY VERY cage territorial. I would not let my boys hold him at all due to fear he would bite one of them. It was really bad cause he would be soooooo nice and then bite the tar out of you and then laugh at you. So I thought really long and hard before even considering getting another quaker. But the decision to do so was soooooo worth it. I could not imagine Ziggy not being here.

I hand raised my quaker, Buki. She was an absolute angel! If I could do anything to have her back I would do it in a heartbeat. Quakers are definetly loud but you can teach them different and quieter calls. Instead of screaming I taught Buki to whistle quietly, and when she did I responded to that instead of her screaming. They are also very loving. Buki wanted to be showered with hugs and kisses all the time and was constantly telling me "kiss kiss." I think that any bird can have the right behavior if they are just shown a little love and you are willing to work out the bad behavior. One thing with my quaker though is that she was very nest aggressive which I've heard is a common female behavior. When I wanted her out of her cage I would wait for her to come to me instead of sticking my hand in, this worked out very well and she usually came out very quickly.

Well thankyou for the replies. I know I could google the info.......and I do google info when researching anything.......but I also like to hear "first hand" stories from people who actually own then as pets or know of them as pets.

I have also heard the blue ones are or seem to be calmer than the green...........I don't know if that is true, but luckily I love the blue birds anyway, so my first choice would be blue.

Once again thanks
