Quaker question to Tiki -- or anyone! Thanks
Tiki, I just got a young tame Quaker on Sunday. He had been at a bird show for two days and it really stressed him out. He is so terrified right now. He doesn't want me to mess with him. He has only eaten a little bit. How long do you think he will be freaked out? Should I try to handle him and talk to him every day?

That's perectly normal. This poor little guy doesn't know he has landed in a great new home with someone who will love him forever. He just knows that some huge flightless creature has taken him away from the only home he has known up to now. Just keep being patient, talk softly to him and offer treats. He WILL eat when he gets hungry enough. Use the same food the breeder was giving him and if it isn't a suitable diet, add new foods gradually. He will come around eventually! Hands2talk2you: Thank you!!

Be patient, talk softly, act happy and excited when greeting him. Offer him 1 inch pieces of medium size millet, or a few safflower seeds, not as his main diet, but as a treat or welcoming gift. It will take a little while for him to settle in. These guys are very flock/social oriented as they get comfortable. Our Sugar, thinks he rules the roost...over our zons and ourselves. He is very opinionated about what my wife wears [like when she puts on her reading glasses, or certain shirts]. We thought our Sugar was girl, but DNA'd a male. Now he's older, he definately has done his boy dance.

Thanks!
Thanks, Tiki and Wally! He is coming around slowly. He did step on my hand last night for a second, then he was like OH MY GOD WHAT DID I DO! lol and stepped right back off!
He is being nicer to my cockatiel now, and vice versa, and I think they will be in the same cage within a week or so! They find each other pretty interesting. ![]()

I would not think to cage them together. QPs can get cage aggressive, as well as tiels, and Qps like to rule the roost. It could be trouble for your tiel. We do not cage any of our fids together. We let them all out and supervise them whenever we are home. Our Quaker thinks everything is his, and does not back down from any of our other birds.
