New to the board
I am new to the board and I have a quaker. I wanted to share something that I think is odd about my bird. His name is Beanie Baby and he hangs from his cage like a bat when he sleeps! Does anyone else have a bird that sleeps like that? Thanks!

LOL CUTE! Welcome to BirdBoard! I don't have any birds that hang from the top of their cage (well, either they are cage free, or there are no top wires), and I haven't had any birds sleep like that before... I have had birds sleep clinging to the cage, or leaning too far forward, or just nearly sleeping on their stomach. I once had one that liked to either sleep in her hut, or sleep on the floor.
Beanie Baby sounds cute! Have any pictures???

Hi there!
If he plays upside down, that's fine, they all seem to love doing that... but you say he sleeps upside down?? That is unusual. I would say it may be neurotic behavior and I would suggest you talk to an avian vet about it. As far as I know Birds should not be upside down for long periods of time or too much blood will rush to their heads.... And there is nothing in their animal instincts telling them to sleep upside down, so it's unnatural and therefore worrying. Just to be on the side of caution, I would ring an avian vet and check it out if I was you! Cheers Amy |

my sister has had a cockatiel and since i've moved out i wanted to get a bird for myself. i went to the store and saw a Quaker parakeet, never heard of it before then either, but just like it was said before, holding it the first time it was as good as bought. it even let me craddle it at the pet store. he;s only gotten his name a few days ago, Batman. he too hangs upside down comftably in the corner of the top of the cage. never heard of this. he also sleeps rightside up nestling his beak on his wing. is this a problem? i'm not sure, he has a great personality otherwise and is careless to meeting new people.. hops right up.

Bird's have various ways of sleeping, and while they are asleep, their feet usually lock in place keeping them from moving or falling. If you have a bird however that enjoys leaning (such as leaning forward), you need to make sure that they have some rough branches to sleep on so that they wont accidentally fall forward.
Cats usually cuddle up by putting their bodies into a tight little ball, usually with their tail wrapped around them. One way that birds usually cuddle up is by fluffing up a bit, and tucking in their beak in their back wings. It's just an occasional sleeping preference...

My quaker, Pumpkin, sleeps on his mirror. I thought of moving it and putting a perch in it's place but then I just figured, if he's happy, I'm happy.
