The Chosen One

Most people would say that I went to the Queensland State Bird Fair to choose a bird-ideally a Quaker. We know better.....I went to adopt a new family member! Since the breeding season was over, all Quakers were about 5 months old and there were only a few left. Mostly blue ones that are twice as expensive as the normal green ones. I did the rounds and found one breeder who had 4 handreared green Quakers in a cage. At first the four sat calmly regarding me with bright black eyes. Then one came over for a closer look and started giving me kisses through the wire. I had been chosen-the message was unmistakeable! "I'm coming home with you!" The other three (all were sold that day) sat back watching their sibling kiss me. SOLD! The breeder produced a surgical sexing certificate and I learned that I had been chosen by a little girl! :eusa_clap

She is at home now in her own large patio aviary in my room well away from the tiels. I have a new bird check up booked for the following Monday, but my AV was at the fair and gave her a cursory once-over and said she looked very healthy. She doesn't know how to step up (yet) and she loves to chew on my gold jewelry. She is very friendly and will let me pick her up, cuddle her and pet her on her head and back-what a cutie! She doesn't bite at all, but she will nibble my fingers. She is eating broccoli and seed and I showed her how to get the water from the drinking tube. She has the sweetest little purr! I am still trying to come up with a suitable name-not sure if I will continue my island theme or go with an Aboriginal or South American name. I'll sleep on it and maybe come up with a short-list.

Hopefully, I can get some pics up tomorrow as I am still exhausted and jetlagged. And y'all can look forward to a full report on the bird fair complete with heaps of pics of the beautiful native Aussie and exotic birds on offer in time for the next newsletter!

She now has a name: Chaska which means "star goddess" in Inca (since quakers come from South America). This is where I found the name:
