pooooor pickle!!

my pickle has an extensive vocabulary, and uses words in context.

The other day I got him out, and he usually says something when he gets on my finger. That day it was:
Pickle: "Where's Pickle?"
Me: "You're right there on my finger, doof!"
Pickle: "NO, where's Pickle???"
Me: "I don't know, I give up, I don't know where you are."
Pickle: "Poooooooooooor Pickle!!!"

hehe he's goofy :)

amazing

Wow if our Mejo would say all that I would keel over!!! That is amazing, our guy says a few words, and mimics sounds quite well, but not two words in a row. He is about a year old, how old is yours???
Sometimes when he thinks we are not listening he will practice lots....saying hello in about 20 different voices. he he Or some whistles, he has been in the best mood lately, which is such a nice treat.

Pickle is ten months old. He started really talking at about five months, saying "pickle pickle pickle!"

From what I've heard about quakers Pickle is pretty exceptional... he talks up a storm! The other day he invented a song that went "doot doot da doot, pickle pickle pickle, doot doo da doot."

Head of the class

I think Pickle would be in the front of the class :):) My guy is 1yr old now, no songs but today he tried sounding like the weed wacker from across the street !! They are a riot, does your little monster run his beak along the cage bars or whatever he is on when he is frustrated or ??? I guess I don't know if it's a he or she, but it acts kinda rough so were going with a him. Probably wrong, never know and thats O.K. with me.
Well going home to the kids......have a nice night :)
Do you know what Pickle is???

Too cute! I wish my Austin would learn to do that! So far, he (I think he's a he) just says 'Ok', 'Peek-A-Boo', 'I love you', and 'Hello'. He mumbles under his breath a lot, but I can never make out what he is trying to say. Every once in a while he will surprise us with a new word he's learned from TV. But the four words above are his favourite.

Is there a trick to teaching them words in context or sentences and songs? Also, yes, my Austin does sometimes run his beak across the cage bars...it might be to get attention.

Regards,

-sdt1

Chaska is about 5 months, maybe too young to talk yet? Born around Christmas time.

Austin is about 9 mos., and he only started talking well about two months ago, so give it another month. It's really important to say the words you want them to learn over and over again, like a broken record. I read that they also learn words best when you talk to them whilst in their cage?

Talking

Hi, I could never talk to my Mejo (my green monster) for any lenght of time while he was in the cage...he would be sooo mad!! If I have time to talk to him he should out of his house.....that is what he thinks :) And he's right, he is out of his house if we are home. He learns words just by saying them lots to him.... and he really "knows" when to laugh. I am not sure but I guess he can tell by our tone when we are about to laugh and he'll do it even before we can and then we are all laughing. He always starts out saying words really really quite and then when he is more confident he'll say them louder. Is that with everybodies Quaker???

A lot of birds learn that if you hear them say something that you want them to say, even if they say it quietly, often times they'll talk louder and more often. Some birds are closet talkers, and others still vary greatly.

I have heard of quakers and greys learning to talk, or atleast the beginning of it, before they were even finished weaning! Now greys may take a long time to wean, so then again that might not be too surprising, though it is possible for birds to learn to talk around the time that they are weaning. Other birds may take longer if they ever do learn to speak human.

My Austin does that same thing...he mumbles, or says words quietly, and every once in a while says something out loud. But, I cannot seem to get him to say new words very often. He seems to want to stick to the same words he learned early on? (i.e., his favourites are "Peek A Boo" and "I love you"). I heard too, that they will often speak more as they mature (for Quakers, in the 2-3 year old range). I'd love to hear from someone on the board with a 2-3 year old Quaker, who might confirm this?
