My quaker is only 6 months old and has not said a word yet but can tell she is going to any time. Her vocalizations are getting more voice like everyday so I can't answer you as far as the quakers go but my greys are very much like that..

Wow! From what I've read it says they start talking around one year so get ready! I'm reading that they are very vocal. I'm hoping he'll teach my Eclectus how to talk! Yes, the Greys are awesome! My friend has one and he is so funny!

Topaz and so far all the blues I have raised are talking by the time they are 9 weeks old.
I talk and talk to mine the whole time I am hand feeding. And with Topaz here and talking I think some of the babies have learned from her. She does not have a lot of words but mostly cause I don't use a lot when talking to her. lol Quakers are listed in the top five for talking ability.

My green quaker Phib is a good talker I think. He talks more in context than my timneh. He likes to do the Quaker song (though he only knows the first verse - but he does it clearly). He loves our greencheek conure Georgia and say "Come 'ere Georgia" while following her everywhere. Its pretty funny. He seems to learn new things pretty quickly. We've recently been working on animal sounds (What's the chicken say? - <clucking sound>) He's got the clucking sound down pat and is working on the phrase before it.
We got him when he was 6 months old and his previous owner told me he didn't talk. After only a few days here he was saying "whatcha doing" and his name. He's now a year. I love him. |

My Quaker is just now coming to life I think. She is about 1 year old and I got her from a bird store. I got her less than 2 weeks ago and she has just been very quiet and still. Is this normal? Or is it just that she isn't used to her new surroundings yet? This morning I heard her whistle (like a cat call?) while I was in the bathroom, and I heard her doing a little chattering, but when I peeked at her around the corner, she stopped. I talk to her from the moment I get home (5:30ish) until I cover her cage (9:30ish). A lot of that time she is on my shoulder and I'm talking to her and giving her kisses. Last night she kissed back a little and chewed on my ear and even "pinched" me a little on the neck. Before this she just sat there quietly. Is she just getting used to me?

The being still and quiet sounds like a bird that is adjusting. The recent behavior sounds to me like she's coming out of her shell. I found that the longer Phib was here the more vocal he became and also the more he pushed the boundaries to see what he could get away with. He is still real sweet but has a more assertive personality than he did when he first came. I would take it as a compliment that she is feeling comfortable enough to start vocalizing and interacting with you.
