Delicate question~Re:Mating
I recently acquired another quaker into our flock. She/ he came about a month ago and had time to acclimate to the male quaker I already had. Yesterday they displayed mating behavior. Today, two more times. My question is will a female assume a more dominant role in the process or is it possible I have two homosexual males lol? I am not trying to be crude. I seriously need to know if a female will try to climb to better angle herself to meet the male. Please dont laugh (much) haha~Zanzi's Mom (and Loki's)

YEs it is and it happens all the time. Not a stupid question at all. The only true way to know is to have your birds DNA tested. I have a Male Macaw who displays female behavior. One thing I do want to stress though is that when you get a new bird you should quarantine them from the rest of your flock for at the very least 30 days. Sometime birds carry genetic disease or virus and do not show any sickness. This sickness the bird never showed before may expose itself after a period of stress (ie: new home?). By Quarantining any new birds for 30-45 days you have the opportunity to "see what happens" so to speak before you infect the entire flock. This is serious brought to light by the fact that birds at pet stores, bird fairs, ect come in contact with birds in large numbers in many places. Even a bird from a private breeder or owner can be holding something in "secret". Protect your flock with this simple safety measure.

My Jenday Conure and my Blue Quaker (neither DNA'd) display mating behavior all the time. I call the conure a boy and the quaker a girl. If they are a girl and boy, can conures and quakers mate and have babies? Should I keep them apart? I have to rehome the conure anyway, (long story - see my post under conures) but until then?
