Thanx, I have really enjoyed having him. Right now he is going through some wierd cage thing. He won't even let me take his food or water dish out. not even to fill it. He is staying in his cage and protecting it all. He has lots of toys but does not play with them. I also got him a happy hut and he never goes in it. His cage is large and he has plenty of room. Anyone know why he got so territorial????. He doesn't chew on the wood toys at all. I know that he is still in the adjustment stage and I am giving him his room but he will only come out and let me hold him about once a day and that is at feeding time. He sits on my shoulder and eats anything I do. Oh I'm sure he will adjust because I will be patient with him and give him all the love I can.Thanx again, Rose

Quakers are totally nuts. They are probably the MOST territorial of the commonly kept parrots and parakeets. Why not just open the door and let him come out on the cage. Move him to a playstand and then fill bowls and do cage cleaning.

Here's my experience:
Quakers are VERY terretorial!! Mine, if he is on my shoulder, won't let anyone touch me, he considers me his terretory.
Mine HATES the happy hut and would "scream" at it when it was in his way, I finally had to take it out.
Quakers aren't like other birds when it comes to toys. Most birds like to chew on toys...well, not quakers. Usually you don't have to worry about him chewing up things...oh no...they'll just disassemble them all together. The toys I've found that work for most quakers are the "thinking toys." By this I mean the plastic toys with colored lenses or the little triangles that have the smaller shapes inside that they can pull out. Quakers are, by far, some of the most intelligent birds (in my experience anyway). Pretty much, the plastic toys or hiding toys or anything with seperate pieces do really well in my quakers cage.
As far as him being so terretorial over his cage, that's not much to worry about, it's quite normal, especially if he's new to it. Think of it this way; you know how territorial kids get over new toys...same thing basically. You just have to bring him out of his cage to get him comfortable being away from it. The cage I found that works best is one that opens up at the top and turns the top of the cage into a play-pen kind of area. the main door to the cage also opens down, creating a platform. Mine knows this specific platform area to be where I'll put treats for him. The cage being so open lets him get comfortable being exposed to the open, but the same security of his cage. I've also added a ladder from his cage to the floor. It took a little while, but now he likes to come and go from his cage by himself, and does it quite often. If I'm in the bathroom getting ready, and his cage is open, he'll sometimes wonder where I am. He'll then crawl down the ladder, walk accross my bedroom to the bathroom. Then of course, he bites my toes to let me know he's there, then laughs at me when I say "ow!" and then he walks back across the room, up the ladder, and to his cage. He really enjoys his independence, but he still comes to me to cuddle and watch his late night t.v. shows with me.
Your quaker is still quite young, mine was just as difficult (if not more) when he was young. He'll come around.

Oh he's just a sweetie and I have all the time in the world. he still gives me kisses and makes the kissy noise. Thanx angain,Rose

Well I've lost another bird to my husband. PeeWee seems to like him better. He can get him out and scratch his head and play with him. I even go near the cage and he starts that head shaking thing. When he starts that you can be sure that he's going to bite you. I just don't know what has happened. he used to only want me. My husband is not around enough to play with him that often. I guess I will have to continue to get him out on the wash cloth and put him on my shoulder, then he is fine and will give kisses and everything. Well still working with him. he'll be fine in a couple of weeks I guess when he realizes that I'm not going to stop and he will start to trust me again. Rose

you both have to work equally with the bird...quakers tend to be terretorial over one person if you let him. If you socialize the quaker often and you both play with him equally then he'll bond to both of you. Mine started that, and we had to break him of that. Now he's SO well socialized that he'll play with anyone including children and he doesn't bite anyone except me or his human dad when he's playing with us. It takes a good deal of work, but he'll be a better bird for it.
