Breeding quakers
Hi I purchased a pair of quakers male green & female blue, not so long ago and they are supposed to be a breeding pair....I recently put them in a better & bigger cage with a nice big used nest box, the other owner said that they bred in a smaller one when she had them, they dont seem to like it when I touch it they seem to go to the corner of the aviary ...Has anyone got any suggestions as to how I entice them into it...They are semi friendly beautiful quakers...Thanks for anyones help...Caroline

Hi there,
The nestbox is inside the cage, i havent really got anywhere to attatch it to the outside...We have only got a small back yard and they see a lot of people...How do I know that they are beginning to mate...I have got cinnamon green cheeks and they are really good breeders, they dont mind if we are there or not...All birds are different i suppose like humans...Thanks for that and any more info would be greatly appreciatied...Cheers Caroline |

Caroline, where do you live? I did not know they are outside. So are they in an actual aviary? or is it a large cage? An aviary is fine to have the box on the inside. If it is a cage you might want to find away to cut a hole and hang on the outside. Either way the birds may be shying away because they are not yet comfortable with you. Especially having you walk into their aviary. I never saw my quakers breed. It might have taken place inside the nestbox for all I know. Know my tiels, lovies and conures were never shy to exhibit sexual behavior. Some birds slow down on thier breeding during colder months, that's why I ask where you are. Also are you absolutely sure these are a male and female? In a couple months if there is no action you might want to have them DNA'd. Don't always believe the word of the seller. I have bought a proven pair before and found out they were both males.

Hi again,
I live near the gold coast nsw so its pretty warm here...They came with dna sexing cards. I have a large cage/aviary its 1200mm long x 600 deep x 900 high i think thats the right height...I cant walk in it, it just has one big door on the front..just bought them and put them in it so it might take some time for them to like where they live, they seem happy, they dont really fly so i think there wings might be clipped but then again they might not want to fly if they dont think its safe to...They let me put my hand in their cage and they come up to the cage front for me to talk to them so they are not scared of me...Hope this helps you to help me ha ha ha Cheers again Caroline |

Caroline, hello again. That is a nice size aviary. True the just need to warm up to their new home. Most quakers when in a closed wing position, their flight feathers will cross in the back over their tails. If they are not clipped. They sound like they are feeling comfortable with you. Give them time. They should breed for you in that warm atmosphere.

Hi again,
Thanks so much for helping me with that..They do really feel comfortable with me as I do them. They will bite if I put my hand in but not hard and they dont launch at me, they just go to peck me but not hard, i clench my fist so that they can go to bite me but they always try go for the soft park of my hand...I am as weiry of them as they are me....I try not to frighten then cause then they wont like me....Also can I ask you another question! When I go to feed them something by hand the female pecks at the male and they make this horrible high pitched noise...wow its loud, what does that mean when they do that and what can I do to try stop them doing it.... Thanks again for you help Regards Caroline |

Nothing you can do. Sorry. I know that sound well! Very shrill. The female is obviously the dominant mate. She is looking out for her welfare and making sure she is fed first. Survival of the fittest in the wild world.

Hi Judy,
Is multibran the same as multigrain bread? They have got a rope toy that goes from one perch to another and the male has started putting that in the nest, I just moved the nest box cause i have got an inspection door on it and i couldnt get to it wher it was and now looks like they have stopped putting things in there, should i move it back again or leave it where i want it....The female was on the bottom of the cage chewing at the sticks and moving them so maybe she will build it on the bottom of the cage?? |
