Question Sleep cage now or later?

My boyfriend is soon to be getting a hand-fed (but fully weaned) nine week old Quaker baby from a reputable breeder in our area. He has a very nice cage (I'd kill to have one that size), and will place it in his living room, which is a pretty high traffic area - for a lot of hours a day. We were talking about a sleep cage for night time, and at first he said he thought he'd wait on getting one.

We've studied quite a bit about Quakers, and know that they can be very cage territorial. I was thinking that he probably should start with the sleep cage to get the bird used to going "night-night" in a different place from the very beginning, and maybe avoid some of that. Good idea or not?

I would!
I didn't do it with my baby Timneh, didn't even know I should, but it would come in handy for busy loud evenings when she is "supposed" to be sleeping.

Not that I have wild and crazy night <ggg> life but it happens in a blue moon!

It's actually a good idea. Another idea is to provide the quaker with a nestbox, as long as it is a male. Male conures and quakers enjoy a nestbox to play in (with foot toys) or to sleep in. You wouldt only have to watch out for aggression which can be easily removed by removing the nestbox... just an idea.... but I do know of someone who has a sun conure and a quaker who both love their nestboxes!

It's also a good time to give your Quaker a happy hut to sleep in. Chaska just loves hers and she was 5 months when I got her. The first couple times I had to put her in it and show her how comfy it was. She now goes in there about 6pm on her own and looks so cute!

I put a happy hut in Pipers cage. He hasnt yet went in. He does poke his head in to see what its all about. I give him a couple more days and he will be in love with it.
My GC conure Pandora LOVES hers.

out

My Quaker loves being out of his cage so much it is never really a territory issue, although he is possesive. He just steps up and then we move on to where we are going.
He HATES to be left behind, he wants in on all the action ~ all of it...the louder, the nosier, the more he seems to enjoy it. He is a busy body, and he does get his sleep although he seems to need less than the rest of the house...ugh :(

Enjoy your baby :aiwebs_02
