New, old ringneck! any tips, name etc.?

Hello all, someone decided to give me their IRN as I would have much more time to spend with her. She is gorgeous!!!!! I've already fallen in love.

She's approximately 8 years old. Her wings are not clipped, she's great with her wings and I'd rather not have them clipped. She was a bit nervous at first but now she has really taken to me and steps up, hangs out on my shoulder, kisses and doesn't bite.

Her previous owners had her for around 6.5 years and they got her from a very neglectful petstore where she was stuck in a cage for at least a year and missing quite a few feathers. She's in great shape but her previous owners weren't able to spend enough time with her after they had their daughter who is now 5.

She doesn't talk so I'm wondering - at around 8 years, is she still able to learn? Anyone have any tips on how to encourage her to speak?

Any general tips on IRNs? Also, I'm trying to name her too. Her previous owners named her "Lady" but I'm not a fan of it. I'd like a 1-2 syllable name which is sort of cutesy but not overboard (some of my pets names are Georgie, Benji, Irwin, Keira - to give an idea of what I'm looking for). Any suggestions?

Thanks!!

Khufu - I love this name for a boy! But she's a girl so I dont know how much you'll like it. If I get another bird soon, Khufu will be his name. Here's some info on Khufu, he was a pharaoh. http://www.guardians.net/egypt/khufu.htm

http://www.birdbytes.com/names.html That link has 18 pages worth of bird names!

with the talking start off saying the same thing eg everytime I walked into the same room as indie i said hello or hello indie. start with something simple. But sometimes some birds just dont speak. By the way what colour is your new irn. What about something like layla its close to lady so she wouldnt get too confused with the name change.

As you can see, I like the exotic, ethnic names and IRNS certainly invite Indian names. You might find something here:

I write fiction set in Ancient egypt so when I read you named your IRN Maya, it is also a name of one of my female characters in one of my stories.
There is also a true person by the name of Maya from egyptian history....

Maya was the Treasurer during the reign of Pharaoh Tutankhamun of the eighteenth dynasty of Ancient Egypt.

Maya collected taxes and performed other services for these pharaohs, including supervising the preparation of their tombs. Maya's own tomb at Saqqara was excavated in 1843 by the archaeologist Karl Richard Lepsius, and its impressive reliefs were recorded in sketches. Over time the tomb was covered by sand, and its location was lost. In 1975, however, a joint expedition of archaeologists from the Egypt Exploration Society in London and the Rijksmuseum van Oudheden in Leiden, the Netherlands, began an attempt to rediscover the tomb, and in 1986 they succeeded.

Here is a link to a picture of the statue of Maya and his wife Merit.

Wow, that's kool! thanks :)
Ever read Pauline Gedge? I LOVE her books & she does a lot of fiction set in ancient Egypt. My all time favourite book is "Child of the Morning" - about Hatshepsut.

Maya is also a Hindi name... I thought it was about time I give a pet a name from the language of my ancestors. So far all I had was Tikay (Hindi for "ok" but spelled wrong hehe)

Hi Delsolarie,

Oh she's beautiful!!! And I adore the name!!! Nice choice...
Some people can be so inventive with names! I'm hopeless...
My IRN's name is Casper, then the budgies are: Buddy (yeah I know very original !!), Clara, Dizzy and Honey! As you can tell, I'm not very good at naming my animals!!!

Keep us posted on how she's progressing...

I'm a pretty new IRN owner too, I've only had Casper a week, and am hand raising him. It's the best thing I ever did, he/ she is just so loving!

Good luck with it all!

Amy.
