Many of the larger shelters offer the opportunity to sponsor the care of a bird (rather like "adopting" a child in the developing world).

I have sponsored birds as gifts or memorials for friends, for a school classroom (to get them hooked), in an offshore locale as a bon voyage gift for someone who is vacationing there....the opportunities are endless. And the added bonus is that my company will match and I can write it off my taxes!
