Ringneck Cage Requirements

I have a nice cage, that was actually used for some of my sugar gliders, that I am hoping to use for a ringneck.

The demensions are 31" wide x 19" deep x 38"Tall. (62" tall while on stand)

The bar spacing is 1/2 inch.

Does this cage sound good? Is the bar spacing too small for a ringneck?

If you are looking at an indian ringneck, and not an alexandrine, the size of the cage sounds good. Well, what type of ringneck are you looking at?

I had thought so! Indian ringnecks are around 16 or so inches long, and if he/she was let out of the cage to play I'm sure the cage that you are thinking about using would do fine!

I have noticed that a lot of sugar glider cages are also good for the smaller birds. Cute things they are! I've seen some bird cages as well that would suit a sugar glider perfectly!

Great!

Okay, now I have to ask about cage Placement. My IRN would get out of cage time in my bedroom, away from my dogs. My dogs are small dogs and cant reach the bird cage, as it is on a stand. My dogs also dont pay any attention to the bird while its in its cage.

So, my question is, should I put the bird cage, in my bedroom, where the out of cage time will be? Or, should I keep the cage in the living room, where everyone is most of the time, and take the bird into the bedroom for out of cage time? I can buy a movable bird tree or perch, to put in my bedroom, so that the bird can hang with me, watching movies and stuff. I only ask because I heard that IRNS can get cage protective... so I figured, that it might be best that the bird doesnt have out of cage time near its cage...

Any thoughts?

Also, as for toys... I know they are chewers, so lots of wood toys are good.. but should I be getting, Cockatiel sized toys? Or Medium sized toys?

I would put the cage in the living room where it can interact with people more. That way it can be more a part of the family and have company most of the time, even if its not actual physical interaction.

I also find that when you let the bird out in the room with its cage it spends a lot of time just sitting on top of the cage.

I agree, livingroom, and move little birdy to your bedroom to interact withk, or put the dogs outside/in a seperate room and let him out in the livingroom.

I'm not too sure about indian ringnecks so I speculate wooden toys meant for tiels to conures (so would be in the $10-$25 range for most, if you can find toys at that amount).

Sounds fine. Mine only goes in her cage to sleep. During the day she sits on a perch that is attached on top of the cage. She can go in or out of the cage as she pleases, Her birdbath is on top of the cage, too. Put the cage near a window and your bird will not be bored. They like to watch the world go by.

The cage size sounds good. Ringnecks are not only chewers, they love all sorts of different toys. Shredder toys, toys with bells, boings, acrylics and don't forget foot toys. I would say tiel size toys probably wouldn't hold up very well, it would depend on the toy. I mostly buy conure size toys for mine, some toys that are meant for small zons and greys would be ok, but again it depends on the toy.
