Foraging for my birds

I go for walks just about everyday to FORAGE for food, not for me but seasonal goodies which my birds enjoy. The manner in which this came about was during walks I observed what the wild birds were eating and tried the same out on my birds. Hey, it is free food, no money involved just taking a bag along and picking up what nature has provided. I froze 44 kgs of fresh dates last year and they lasted 10 months, I also freeze fresh corn on the cob and that lasts me for the three months there is no fresh corn available. Pomegranate seeds can also be frozen as many other berries. The next time you go out for a walk, take a sandwich bag and pick up goodies along the way. Passionfruits and guavas are also a hit with ringnecks.

I can't exactly do that here, but I think I will pick up some pomegranite today at the store for them.. Thanks for the ideas.
Course I don't know of any food that a ringie will turn down - not in my house anyway.

Clara you are absolutely correct, they eat just about anything ! ! ! Today I went to get a Shabbat Chala bread, my husband tells me it is quicker for you to prepare the dough, let it rise, and bake it. The shop is a four minute walk and it took you an hour. Then he saw the 5 kilo bag full of goodies for the birdies and he laughed. Usually he will come out "foraging" with me. Today I beat him to it. I snapped some pictures, perhaps these are nearby for you, rosehips for sure, any rose left to turn to hip, they have seeds inside the birds go crazy for. Cedar pine nut, and dates, any street here is loaded with dates!!! Just walk along the medium and pick them up of the ground. I pick them, wash them and freeze them for an all year treat. Best of all they are NATURAL and FREE.

That's awesome you can do that here, but like Clara said we can't do that here. There isn't anything to get besides pinecones and acorns and grass. No wild pomegranates, dates, or guavas to be found unfortunately. If I buy an apple tree I might have some apples in a few years, but there is no wild fruit here.

I have rosehips, but aren't only the type that grow wild safe? I've never given them to the birds. One of my rosebushes is the same type that grows wild at the beach, I'll try them on the birds tomorrow! thanks for the suggestion.
