Question Mousebirds

Does any one know anything about mousebirds? They really look like a cool bird.

Well I read a book called "Kiki the Mousebird" about an orphaned one that was raised/rehabbed by an elderly couple. He was quite the clown, and very intelligent. And when it was time to set him free, he refused to go.

We had them at the store. They are great birds - very gentle and they hang from the tops of their cages like bats to sleep. They have a VERY specialized diet, so do your research first. Extremely wet droppings, but they tend to go in the same spot in their cage. I would get two. Like I said, research their diet. If I recall, low iron and lots of fruit.

I've been looking into information on these little guys too, and they sure do seem like great pets. If I ever have more space I'd probably get a few, but until then I'm going to focus on emerald toucanets. I wonder if anyone in CA breeds mousebirds.

They are really fun birds to work with, in an aviary setting where they have room to scamper - cages, probably not the best situation in my opinion.

Fruit eater, mixed with softbill pellets (our mix consisted of bird of paradise and parrot pellets). Rather timid around larger or aggressive species.

There is a book out regarding their care, Mousebirds In Aviculture: Purchase Your Copy Now!
