How does it feel to have a Hornbill

Tell me how are they harmless, they are scary they have big beaks

So tell me please are they friendly???

If they are I am getting it when i get to Indonesia good deal around $60-$100

What hornbill species reared legally would actually cost under $100?? Do you have experience with softbills?? Hornbills (most certainly the larger Asian species) do have specialized requirements and if you are concerned about their large beaks, size and asking if they are friendly, I would recommend a budgie.

I would do alot more studying on them before considering one, they need a specialised diet and alot of room. They aren't like a parrot so their personality is completely different and i don't think they warm up to people as easy as parrots may. Really if you don't know much about them i would suggest not..also the quarantine would be quite a while for a bird to sit and wait. birdsnreps has one and she will tell you more about them but i think they are hard work.

honestly, i would say NO to anyone who is not experienced with toucans or hornbills. over here in the states, they are always parent reared, so they are not tame at all, you have to work with them alot to tame them down. they have a very special diet, and they cannot have ANY hard food at all, NO seed, no hard pellets, nothing like that. its very easy to feed them a wrong diet and make them get hemochromotosis, or iron storage disease, which can either shorten their lifespan significantly, or it could be fatal. i have a trumpeter hornbill, she was parent reared and we are still working with her to tame her into a good pet. shes VERY intelligent, MUCH MORE intelligent than any of the parrots we own, thats for sure. shes a pig too, she eats ALOT of food, and its mostly fruit, so its expensive to feed her. shes also picky, we are trying to get her to eat diff stuff besides her normal diet. you have to be careful if you clip their wings cause they cannot climb around like a parrot can. one of the most important things when keeping a hornbill is their diet. a bad diet can kill a hornbill very quickly :(

the only reason i felt comfortable buying a hornbill to keep as my own pet is cause i learned how to care for them by working at the local zoo with several diff hornbills. i also have the good breeder that i bought mine from that helps me out with any questions that i might have, so i have professionals to help answer my questions and give me good, accurate info on them. thats another thing, its VERY hard to find good, detailed info about how to care for the hornbills becuase they are so uncommon, and harder to breed. unless you work at a zoo or have been breeding them for a long time, its almost impossible to read about how to care for them in a home environment.
