Ducks as pets

When i was a teenager i had a pet duck - a mallard.
She was a joy to have. She was free to roam around our house [she didn't wear a diaper & to be honest i don't remember her ever having an accident in our home] - ground floor & spent a lot of time hanging outside the house or walking down to our pond [we lived in the country]. The only possible trouble we had was that she stole my dog's food but luckily old Pete was very gentle & long suffering.

She loved to be with me - her Mom. She's hop into my lap & cuddle. She'd call out to me in her funny duck voice. She eventually attracted a lot of wild ducks to our pond & ended up following them south late in the fall. I left her alone so she could make the choice easier. I looked for her every year - we had a lot of ducks & geese return to the pond after that, but i never saw her again.

Today i came across this site in my area & had to share it with you. I don't know the restrictions in your area but a duck is a wonderful pet.

THE GOOSE'S MOTHER & FATHER

I think they are great pets! I have had many. I used to incubate the eggs & hatch them out. I just had to put my last duck to sleep last week & it about killed me. I had her since she was a baby, she was crippled. She got to the point where she couldn't get around well anymore & her stomach was getting irritated. But she live 2 happy years with me in my house & was very loved. She loved everyone & everything. She used to like to sleep with my chihuahua's. Crystal

So sorry to hear about your loss. She was lucky to have you.

I think that all birds [well all creatures!] are wonderful. The duck is way underrated. If i ever move out of this apartment i'm getting one.

Are you going to get another?

I think I'll stick with the fids for now. I was thinking about it then I got the 28 Gouldian Finches & well, their keeping me busy. I have been doing nothing but building cages during the day & working my reg job in the evenings. I'll be glad when I get these cages done. Crystal

Maybe when you get the time - - you will hopefully post the photos of your new birds & cages - I guess the DIY section?

Wow you sure know how to go all out - what possessed you to have so many finches at once? They're wonderful & all - is it like an aviary or really large cages or breeding pairs? Those Gouldian finches can be quite expensive. Do you have lots of varieties?

Guess i should check out the finch section.....

At one point i was really thinking about the Java finch - they're lovely too - but what bird isn't?

Glad you talked about your duck(s) tho - when people are looking for that cuddly bird - they really fit the bill [ no pun intended].

One of my co-workers is ALWAYS trying to give me a chicken. For my apartment. Ummm... OK?

Don't get me wrong: I LOVE chickens. And I've read stories about individuals doing OK w/ indoor living, with and without diapers. Technically speaking I've got enough room for the dear things to wander, too.

I can just imagine, though. I live above one of the funeral homes I work for. With my luck the chicken would get loose somehow and find it's way downstairs at the wrong time...

With all that said, I'd love to have chickens or ducks :) Particularly ducks -- I loved caring for the orphaned ducks at the refuge. Maybe I'll have the right amount of space one day :)
