I've always been curious, where does one get button quail eggs? I have read and heard of other people who have them but have never seen them anywhere.

i got them from a breeder online(can't remember the name at the moment)...because they just ship the eggs...easy peasy.

however there are actually reputable breeders on Ebay even. my friend got some from ebay 100% hatch rate. and like 60cents an egg. i was suprised at how many different types of birds eggs you can order from ebay....

well only a few more days before they hopefully start hatching!!!!!!

hope this helped!

Woohoo!! Congrats! They look just like the ones I have in my incubator!! I have 9 in there currently, and they're due a week from today! Just remember to stop turning them at day 14, and at that time bring the humidity waay up! Don't move them to the brooder until they're dry, which should take like an hour or two.

I just looked to see what they look like cuz someone on CL has 2 button quail that they don't want. They are cute little birds! If I only had a place to keep them then I would get some eggs and try it. Hope they hatch for you!

That's so exciting! What do you plan to do with the little'uns? I bred quails when I was 11-12. A few batches the parents raised them, it was the most amazing experience. One batch I decided to get incubated, and when they came home, the little round fluff balls would follow me around and eat out of my hand. I didn't know anything about them though, and they all died. *Kicks self repeatedly*

I might get some buttons for my aviary... I am still trying to decide whether to hatch some or just buy them... I mean hatching seems fun and all, but I don't know if I have the time... Plus Buttons are like $3 here anyways. It's funny cause their $3 each at a breeder, but $2.50 at the pet shops :P

chinese painted quails aren't reallllly button quails. Button quails are a whole different quail genus, Turnix. The chinese painted quail are from the genus coturnix. So technically they are only related to button quail in the fact that they are actually quail and thats it. I prefer to call the chinese painted quail, king quail. This is the name for Australia, as they arent just native to china, there is a native population in Australia as well.

King quail, i find are one of the hardest birds to artificially raise. Easy to hatch. But i find when raising the young artificially, they are extremely weak compared to larger quail families like lophortyx as well as other coturnix species. If one would want to raise a quail species, i find japanese quail (coturnix coturnix)a suitable candidate. This quail is from the same family as the king quail, but are roughly about 130 mm longer in length.
This species doesnt incubate its own eggs due to selective domestication pressures, so it is there for very easy to artificially incubate, and raise. When young are raised to adults they can be become extremely tame, and i can let mine run around freely on the lawn without them flying up in alarm.

If u keep king quail (chinese painted) and want to breed as many young as possible, the parents can incubate and raise better than any artificial incubator, so i reccomend leaving the eggs for the parents.
But if u are interested in incubating quail; japanese, californian and bobwhite quail are all very easy to incubate and raise artificially.
Not just quail though, if u are interested, pheasants and small partridge species are just as easy to incubate and raise. But before purchasing the eggs, i always have this point to incubating, Always prepare where these new birds that you've raised are going to live. It seems like an obvious point but you would be surprised how many have this problem.

I hope this helps

Zac,
