Bandwidth and Photos...

For photos, would it help any if only links were provided to the photos, or images of a certain size could only be uploaded/shown??? I know for people with a slow connection cannot easily view large images, but would it help to also make it a rule of thumb to show only images of a certain size, whether linked to or uploaded? And wouldn't that, in the end help cut down on the bandwidth use? Or no? Just curious...

People can opt for text only in their user cp if they don't want to see the photos or are unable to because of slow speeds.

I don't know that you can choose to not show the images if they are inline (IE, linked from another site)...I can try to code something up though that will let you choose whether or not to show the images or not.

Was just thinking about that... Tiki, not sure if I saw the text thing only or not, might have just skipped over it, but I'm talking about BB itself, and it's bandwidth use....

Kevin, images are shown if they are in an IMG tag. Otherwise, it's just a link... Maybe there's a code out there that will resize the photos if you upload one that is too large??? I mean to BirdBoard alone, either into the posts or the album? Well, at least something to help make the site run smoother, with less bandwidth consumption, was what I was thinking about...

Right..I completely understand what you're saying....

If an image is hosted on another site, it affects us in no way....but it does affect those on a slower connection. I will try to come up with time to come up with a solution.

Had somehow heard that if the photo is shown on the site then it does take bandwidth... wasn't sure if it was true or not... if it's just a link I understand, but what about it actually showing a photo?

No....If an image is on, say, photobucket, and we show it on our page instead of linking to it, it uses absolutely 0 bandwidth on our side. Photobucket absorbs all of that. If, however, it is on our server, then yes....we are paying for that.
/me is tired of boring web development classes when I already know it all anyway....
