Uploading video clips

I would like to upload some clips of my birds. I have never done this before so hoping someone can help. I currently have my personal videos burned to DVDs. Do I have to download it to the hard drive and make a clip file? Can I do it straight off the DVD or do I have to do it off the video camera which would mean I have to get the Mini-DV from my safety deposit box (of my baby tiels growing up) which is kind of a pain as my job is far from the bank.

What kind of file is a video? I mean if photos are jpegs or gif, what would a video have? What is the max length for a video clip?

I have the video editing software that came with my Canon digital video camera. Haven't tried to use it yet-easier to just hook it up to the Panasonic DVD recorder and burn a DVD.

It depends on what your DVD camcorder records files as. Please insert the DVD into your computer, and explore it, and let me know if the files are recorded in mpg, mpeg, AVI, or what. Those are the common video types. If the files are recorded in a weird file format (most are not) then you will have to rip the video off of the disk. But the first question to answer is what type of files are on the disk. We'll go from fthere.

I wish I could help you.. I make my videos on a digital still camera that has the capability to make videos not a video camera. So I do not know if they are the same

But I can tell you that mine is a 5 mega pixels so the videos are so large that I have to encode them to make them smaller. I have to make them smaller so that they will upload to the net. If they are too large then they will not upload.. My normal size video before being encoded is 40-150 mb.. after being encoded is around 5-20 mb.

I use the Windows media 9 encoder to encode the videos, so you might have to do that. Or I think Real player has one too but I don't know much about it I don't use it. I was never able to find it :D

OK, Kevin, I will do that when I log off and report back. My digital camera has the capacity to do short movies but it's only 2 MP. The ones I want to upload are of my 5 young'uns as they grow up though-this happened in Jan and Feb this year.

Hi Kevin, I tried to get back onthis morning but the server kicked me off and wouldn't let me back on again. Anyway, I think I have a weird one.

The files are like Video_TS (type IFO)
and VTS_01_0.BUP (type BUP)

I never heard of either of those. I haven't tried downloading striaght from the vidcam to the PC yet. These were made on a stand alone DVD burner from Panasonic which is more simialr to a VCR except it records both onto it's internal hard drive and onto a DVD-R.

OK, that DVD is recorded in actual DVD format. Those are a PAIN to rip to the computer. Your easiest way would be to rip straight from the camera.

Bummer! Now I have to figure out how to get to the bank during business hours to retrieve the original MiniDV. (Thank God I save my originals-no way I would want to lose the vids of my babies grwoing up and fledging. I suppose I could try recording back from DVD to the camera as my camera has input terminals.

In the meanwhile, I'll shoot something new this weekend and rip straight from the camera and let you know what format it is in. Or I might try with the digital camera like Candice.

My files are too big!

Hi Kevin! HELP!!! I have finally figured out how to capture the video clips and have 8 really cute ones done in Adobe Premiere 6.0 LE (came on the Sony VAIO laptop. I have been trying to upload them and keep getting error screens. They are all AVI files. The length of the clip runs between 1 minute to 2.2 minutes, files sizes are between 172 MB to 469 MB. By comparision the ones I did off the digital camera (no sound) are about 3.69 MB. Candice says something about encoding-what does that mean? I only have dial-up which connects at 50.6 Kbps. At work I haev broadband but it sometimes cuts out on me if the head office are doing major projects-can't control it.

These are so cute-they are my baby cockatiels from last January as they grow up! So how do I get these things uploaded?

if your on dialup kiss it bye bye it will take you ages!

as far as encoding goes if you compress it down really low with good software your still looking at around 6mb per minute or so.... then uplaoding it is another story since u have a dialup it would take hours for ya if it stayed connected for the full length of time.

If ya want burn a copy of the dvd onto another dvd and mail me it and i can encode it for ya...

Thanks, Kevin. What if I tried to do it from the office? I can't burn AVI DVD's I can burn CDs that I think hold 700MB? Can you PM me where to send it to? Honestly, I had no idea how big these files would be. I haven't even gotten to the fledging stage yet so I would probably have maybe 15 clips in the whole series. Those short clips took a good 20 min to upload. Maybe if I go to an internet cafe-that would be faster without work hassles-I can only stay on max 55 min because if I go to an hour it alerts the spyware thingy that checks up on employees. How long would a compressed file take to upload and where would I get the software?

That thing we were talking about this morning---it's at the office so I will send it Monday.
