Trouble getting site to load

I've had trouble getting the forum to load. I get a message like "server not found."
This started happening after the site went to a new server, before that I never had a problem. Most times refreshing does nothing. I have tried I.E. and Mozilla Foxfire both get the same result. When I do get on I can view some posts and not others. If I go back to view a post a second time, sometimes I get the "server not found" message. This is the only site I have problems with. Anyone else?

Hopefully I get this posted

It's possible that you have a conflicting DNS record cached in your computer. It's not an uncommon thing on a Windows based operating system/network. (Or even on Mac's or Linux; however I do hot have instructions for anything other than a MS Windows OS).

Luckily this is a pretty simple thing to correct (if it is the problem) and if it's not the problem it will not adversely effect your machine with anything else. In fact the instructions are a good thing to run from time to time to keep your network cache clean.

First write down the below instructions as you'll need to close ALL web browsers before doing this else the settings won't reset.

Go to your "Start Menu" and then to "Run" then type into the command line "cmd" (without the quotes of course) and press Enter or click OK.

A new window will appear (known commonly as a command prompt/window). In this window type this:

ipconfig /flushdns

and press Enter. Next type this:

nbtstat -R

and press Enter. Next type this:

nbtstat -RR

and press Enter. Now one last time type this just to make sure:

ipconfig /flushdns

and then completely reboot (shutdown and restart) your PC and you should be set. If this doesn't fix your problem, then also try unplugging your router (the power cord) at home and waiting 90 seconds and then replugging it in. Then the final fix would be is that your ISP is having some DNS server problems and should perform a DNS Master Refresh command to fix the problem.

I know this sounds a bit technical - sorry for that - but network administration has been my carrier for the last 18 years. This should resolve your problems. I hope it fixes it for you.... good luck.

I will also try the instructions given above because since the site went to a new server I can hardly ever open it or it is extremely slow to open. Most of the time though it is "Server not found".

I like this forum a lot but have not been able to visit it lately d/t the above problem.

I am using Windows XP.

I am guessing it may not be on the user end. It does seem to be idiosyncratic, but I see no real difference using two different computers (both windows based-but different versions); IE, Netscape or Firefox; LAN at work, cable at home or a couple of wireless and hard connect lines in hotels. In my case, it started before the server upgrade -- the slow loading and transition after the first link up was "cured" by the new server, but the initial connection is about a 50:50 chance of success even now.

Something is really weird here... I am wondering if its at the point where we need a second server and split the load between the two. One server, serving the html, images, pages, etc and the 2nd server handling the database which essentially is the backbone to the whole thing. Just means a alot more a month in hosting ugggh

I tried the steps above, but with no noticeable improvement. It's about a 50/50 if the site loads. I've tried IE and Mozilla both signed in and not. It doesn't seem to matter. All other sites work normally. I haven't had time to call my ISP, due to long hold times.

I shouldn't say this, but the site is loading better. It's not a 100%, but it is better.

Kevin, Just a thought. I'm by no means a data expert, but I'm learning. Would deleting some of the older posts (1 yr +) help? Could these older posts be archived somewhere else for reference? I work in telecom and could also ask some of my expert engineers at the office who specialize in data. I work with some really, really sharp people who do this for a living.
