Branson! You can pet a Toucan!

I was preparing for my trip to branson in July, and came across an add for this place called Wings of the World in Branson. So, I called them and asked them about it. They said they have birds from all over the world, and I could visit anytime I wanted. They also said I would be able to hold and feed a toucan! Also a Lory. I cannot wait, this is my chance to convice my husband that we need a toucan for a pet! I cannot wait!! You can also go to their website at www.wingsoftheworld.com Maybe other on here will want to go!!

Just a word to the wise about actually LIVING with toucans. Its a very messy arrangement and the cages need to be REALLY wide. They don't fly so much as hop from limb to limb. Consequently, they require long horizonatal cages, the kind that take up a lot of room in the average home.

Also, there are few creatures on earth messier than toucans. They are fruit eaters and poop shooters. The area around their cages will need to be papered for at least 2 feet all the way around. Even that might be inadequate.

Most toucans are kept in glass aviaries for that reason. They are beautiful, comical and sweet, but really don't make good pets for most people. If you have a huge home and easy to clean floors, then by all means consider a toucan. If however, you don't, try another species.

I'm not Martha Stewart and I live with 10 large parrots, primarily macaws. Still, I would pass on a toucan for the above stated reasons.JMHO

we had two swainsons toucans ( please excuse any spelling mistakes )for a short time, it did not take us long to realize that we could not keep them...we had a pretty nice large long cage for them, but..they really needed more room and they were very very very very LOUD ( different than my macaws or cockatoo ) neighbors complained... messy is an understatement...and BIG, wow what beaks.
beautiful
we re homed these to a place where they have outdoor aviaries just for toucans.

we now have toucanettes ( 3 of them ) they are awesome ( but still messy )
they love blueberries and paypaya..
bonnie and clyde are guayna toucanettes and Jewel is an emerald toucanette. We do not handle bonnie and clyde, and are encouraging them to mate. Jewel can still be handled and is pretty sweet...

This is Jewel ( notice the blueberries..lol)

They are absolutly beautiful!! I would love to have a toco toucan. My husband is begining the process of building a sunroom with an aviary. Not sure if I would want a toucan, or a macaw. I love them both. It just seems that a toucan is just more exotic of the two. They sure are beautiful!! I would love to have one. From what I understand they are also pretty expensive, and their life span is not that long. I will decide after my trip to Branson. I don't mind the mess.

I would love to have a Toco Toucan someday... I know they are expensive, but I was intrigued (sp?) when I went down to FL and the neighbor had a toco. They had him in an outdoor aviary. They bred Toucans for a while and when they decided to sell, thye kept him b/c he only had one whole leg. I still liked watching him though!
Maybe one day... When I have a bigger bird room and the money :)
