I read that at a Toucan sight. I do believe that "jungle bird" call we have all heard and/or tried to imitate is a Toucan.

toucans as far as i know are usually very quiet. there are a couple of species that are called "whistlers" i believe, but everyone says they dont compare to a screaming parrot.

we have a really tame swainsons at the zoo, she is awesome!! she loves to cuddle and makes the cutest purring noises :) i want one, lol.

I have an emerald toucanet, which is a small species of toucan, he is very quiet, the loudest noise he makes is a clucking sound that is a bit like a chicken's, and not all that loud. Most of the noise he makes is on par with a cat's purr in terms of volume, in fact he does purr like a cat when he's happy! When I first got him he was completely quiet for several hours, and I was actually starting to think he was mute until he finally made his first little croaking noise.

Whom ever said they are the noisiest jungle birds is way way off. Toucans are generally very quiet birds, and even those whom have loud distress calls are going to be pretty quiet most of the time, and I say this not just because of my own experience, but because of what others say about their pets. There's a few species that have a sort of yelping sound that they make, I'm probably speaking of the same whistlers the above poster mentions. The Swainson is the only toucan I can think of right now that I've heard making the yelping sound. It's somewhat loud, but it really cannot compete with the volume of most macaws or cockatoos.

Having a 6 yo Swainson Toucan I can say they do make a "yelping" sound, to me it sounds more like a bunch of cockatiels.

We took her in about three months ago, she was kept in a garage with about 20 rabbits. needless to say, we've moved her to a large flight cage and she has become partof the "macaw" flock..she eats when they do and loves to play. She loves to get really close and watch when I'm scrubbing cages near her. She's infatuated with sponges!

well i have a wf amazon and i have just learned that the sound i always associated with a toucan in jungle movies comes from parrots.

i am partially deaf and have had fred my wfa for 8 months now and yesterday was the first time i have ever put my hearing aides in while i have had fred.

not only was i amazed at the sounds i have missed hearing but i was amazed with the fact that he is a whole whole WHOLE lot louder than i realized.

my house may well sound like a johnny wiesmiller tarzan movie when i have the windows opened hehehe. i just love it.
