They are amazingly beautiful. They need a bigger space than any parrot cage on the market could offer. An aviary would be the best. They MUST be able to fly and jump around. Even with those big, clunky beaks, they are incredibly agile and acrobatic. They're difficult to train from what I've heard.
Everything they eat comes out in a messy poo in 3-6 minutes. Very very messy. They are seed spreaders in the wild, eating lots of berries and spreading the seeds as they fly.
I saw one in a pet store in a tiny cage and it broke my heart. They honestly do not make good pets and people profit off of them simply because of their good looks. Not going to lie, I would love to have one too. It's better to rescue one if you can give him a huge space to live. Also, a high % of them are wild caught or are first generation of wild caught birds.

Jake, If your mom refuses to drive to a bird fair how is she going to let you buy a five to ten thousand dollar + bird??? Just curious here. They dont bite but they can JAB. They need a long wide Aviary and not a cage to be completely happy. They dont eat regular bird foods and need allot of prepared foods and a low iron diet. If given the right setting I have seen them as happy and playful pets. The poo is wet but it drops straight down and they dont shoot it like Lories and it doesnt harden like parrot poop - I actually liked cleaning the cage of one I had to once BETTER than the other parrot cages.

wow they cost that much? i didn't think they did. She said that it was a possibilty to geta toucan but i had to find out lots of info first. i knew they wouldn't be cheap but i wasn't expecting that price range. i could definetly get the aviary because i have a huge yard. but it would need a place inside too but i could definetly get an inside aviary too or build one. she wasn't like absolutley no on the bird fair but when i asked her she just kinda looked at me like i was crazy for wanting drive to a bird fair that was hours away thats all. So i'm saying that theres only like a 5% chance that i will be there.

i didn'y know there was one at fort rapids! I have a little bit of abetter chance going there. if i keep askin she wil eventually brake down i hope ha but she doesn't see birds as important or anything like that she thinks that i'm carazy just for getting on here and another bird forum i get on (tailfeathers.com). she thinks of the usuall dog and cats as actuall pets but that doesn't mater to me because she takes me to the vet and stuff like that she just won't do anything that isn't necessary to me. but she does what is an absolute must so thats good. i just have to wait til september when i get my liscense so that i can go to these things.
